It's our second cryptic writing contest!

How it works:
1) Entrants should sign up in this thread. Cryptic sign-ups are encouraged.
2) I will assign a list of 10 words that entrants will write clues for.
3) All entrants will PM the clues they write to me, along with explanations.
4) I will post the clues and explanations in this thread. In addition to the clues written by the GL, I'll include a clue published in a respected crossword for each word.
5) All entrants will rank the top three clues for each solution. Those who did not submit cryptic clues may participate in the voting.
6) I will then tabulate the scores, awarding 3 points for Gold, 2 for Silver, 1 for Bronze, and 0 for any clues that miss the podium.
7) Highest combined score wins. We'll award three medals for each individual solution, three for the highest scoring individual clues overall, and three overall medals based on combined score from all clues.

Deadline for cryptic submissions is 11:59pm (GMT -4) on Monday 8/20.

Participants:
1) 3iff
2) novice
3) Zag
4) Amb

13)
14) Published crossword clue

Just a reminder - please provide explanations for each clue. I'll likely standardize them to ensure total anonymity for the writers, but this will be much easier for me if you provide me something to work from.

As I said, I'll invis the explanations for any who prefer to work without them.

Answering some questions from several previous posts.

1) If you rework some clues, sending the whole list again is the easiest for me.
2) Deadline extended til next Monday at midnight.
3) OK, esme, you have a spot. Please submit your clues before the deadline.

FYI, I just received a submission from Dej Mar, who hasn't previously posted in this thread (or anywhere on the GL, except as a guest). Welcome, Dej Mar.

That puts us up to 13 entries including the published clue.

Does anyone see a need to revise the scoring method given the number of entries? I suppose we could vote by giving every clue a score on a 0-10 scale...

I'd prefer the old system gold/silver/bronze. Trying to pick three good ones is tough. Trying to score every clue for a word would be harder/more work.

OK, I'll think about ways to revise it just slightly and keep you all posted.

I'm interested to see if the published clues are going to win. I like all of them, but the one limitation I had in making my selections as my own ability to parse them. It could be I left some really great ones on the table since I couldn't crack them.

Since I have seen more than one in the submitted clues, perhaps we should discuss indirect anagrams here. What are the thoughts/feelings about them?

Here's what I have seen about them from cryptipedia...

An indirect anagram is a type of anagram in which a synonym or other subsidiary indication is given partially or wholly as the anagram fodder.

Example: Unusually tough monster (5)

The solver is expected first to find the synonym HARDY for "tough", and then to anagram it to give the answer HYDRA, as opposed to being given the clue "Unusually hardy monster (5)", in which the letters to be anagrammed are provided.

During the formative years of the modern cryptic clue, indirect anagrams were commonplace; it was not until Ximenes' On the Art of the Crossword was published in 1966 that indirect anagrams began to be widely considered unfair to the solver.

The end result of this controversy is not a global ban on indirect anagrams, but general agreement that they are unfair and excessively difficult, which has lead to their disuse in almost all major cryptic crosswords.

I believe I have seen indirect anagrams panned on this site. How would the scorers feel about clues involving indirect anagrams?

Seems a bit odd to be discussing this prior to scoring. But I might as well volunteer that indirect anagrams are a big no-no in my book.

I struggled with that, but I thought we should be fair to setters who may not know this. I know it took me awhile (and getting panned here, IIRC) to figure out that this was frowned upon when I started trying to write cryptics. I have a feeling that any who submitted these did so without knowing how indirect anagrams are viewed.

Seconded.

Tahnan write a good description of why they are so bad. The basic problem is that the author looks at Unusually tough monster (5) and thinks that it's so very obvious, but the solver has to say, "is 'unusually' really an anagram indicator or not? Of the dozens of synonyms for 'tough' which one do I need to anagram? It just makes for a search tree that is too large.

It's not quite so bad if the clue to the anagram fodder really has only one choice (i.e. pachyderm, not that I can think of something 'elephant' would anagram to), but it's best just to avoid them altogether.

Indirect anagrams can be submitted, since the submitter will be aware it will be at the risk of actually getting any points.

Same as someone who doesnt put an anagram indicator. It's part of the reason I cannot believe "Criticized Debater!" got any votes at all in the last round - let alone gold. I disqualified it for not having any indicator. I wouldn't like to drive through an intersection near this person Wink

Then you disqualified it for the wrong reason."Criticized" is the anagram indicator, the only potential problem is the presence of "debater" in the literal reading of the phrase.

Isn't part of the problem with Criticized debater that the anagram indicator (assuming you are OK with "criticized" as an anagram indicator, which I think I am) is also the definition?

It reminds me of Flexible relatives (9) VERSATILE, which was called by some a "semi &lit" in the get a clue thread, and didn't really work overall.
