at 3:46: Ben Folds Five, Brick

"Than I ever have before.

She's a brick and I'm drowning slowly"

Is it just me or are a lot of these clips the trail of a verse into the start of a chorus?

Finding a single word seems too easy. I suspect we'll need more about these lyrics than just one word - maybe we should keep a record of the entire line, just in case?

BTW BIg Yellow Taxi has the word "screen" to match Daysleeper. Not sure what the entire clip is, though.

I was thinking that maybe you use the number of songs the word appears in as an index into that word.

Can't hear the songs here, so I'm no help on that front. Dispirited

That is what I was thinking too, but I suppose it can't hurt to track the full lyrics, just in case.

7) Fake Plastic Trees - But GRAVITY always wins. It wears him out, it wears him out

9) Halo - This don't even feel like falling. GRAVITY can't forget, so pull me back to the ground again.

I think the Blink182 song might actually be "Adam's Song" which has a line about a cup of APPLE juice - and it's in the designated time slot listed.

Looks alarming like one of the last puzzles you guys did on the 2012 Hunt. I had no idea what you were doing the whole time on that one.

It also looks like one of those pics you stare at until it turns 3D.

Lots of fun stuff to try out here:
http://imgops.com/www.mit.edu/~puzzle/11/puzzles/world1/mario_clash/assets/MarioClash.png

I don't see any hints in the puzzle on what to try, though.

Maybe the 3D semblance means we should try to shift the various colour bands to remove the 3D effect. There seems to be some repetition in the image, that supports this idea.

Huh, I was wrong. It always seems like Mystery Hunt puzzles are more complex than that. Not that I'm complaining.

Clip #5 was bugging me. I now see it's Mr. Jones, but even though I own the album and have listened to that song probably hundreds of times all told, I don't think I ever would have ID'd it. It just sounds so different with the backing vocals turned up like that.

I'm out on this next one. Can never see those images to save my life, and if it's an "analyze the pixels in this image" thing, I can't help there either.

Eek, IrfanView tells me there are 6831 unique colors in the original image. It would be a bit tedious to look at their RGB values without some sort of program

Did not resize, that is what was visible on my screen (don't know how to move it to see the parts off the screen either, I've never run a picture this big through this decoder).

I did not change the picture before it went into the decoder, just saved it to the hard drive, so dimensions should be the same as the original image.

Band of noise at the top of the decode is 7 pixels high.

Mario World 1-1 Meta

Yay, Google advanced search (able to limit to searches without MIT or puzzle) to help avoid seeing any answers.

So far our answers are all types of fungus:

OYSTER Pleurotus ostreatus, Oyster Mushroom
ORANGE PEEL Aleuria aurantia, Orange Peel Fungus
CHARCOAL BURNER Russula cyanoxantha, Charcoal Burner Mushroom
PANTHERS Amanita pantherina var. pantherina, Panther Cap Mushroom (don't see any with panther's')
CANNONBALL Sphaerobolus sp., Cannonball Fungus
?
?

It may be leading us to PARASOL, another type of mushroom (from first letter of genus names).

If you want to call that in, I'll check it. If we are headed there, JACK O' LANTERN (Omphalotus olearius) would be the likely option for the next O from what I've seen.

There's also HARE'S EAR, but it would seem too obvious to point to a mushroom.

Might be hard to check and avoid seeing answers to the 2 remaining puzzles.

I'm OK with waiting.

Edit: Why is HARE'S EAR an obvious point to a mushroom?

It's a lot less common a phrase than JACK O'LANTERN, seems like you'd hit on the fact that it's a fungus pretty easily. Though now that I google it the top results have to do with fishing lures, not fungi.

Maybe we should just move on and solve the next puzzle to get the verification we need for the meta. I don't see anything obvious to do with this one. Maybe run some color filters on the image to see if any information becomes visible. (crossposted with Suspence)
