Meh, sneaky, but I doubt it's illegal. IP addresses aren't a private as some people seem to think they are.
Now to hop over to my other account and disagree to cause controversy while nobody suspects it's all one person.

Q, You have that icon here because you're a moderator. Most people don't see it.
extro, you've certainly done nothing illegal, nor wrong (IMHO). He probably has not done anything illegal, either, though I think it is wrong and it is certainly sneaky. (On the other hand, maybe that other user is his wife, and she really does agree with everything he says. Hah!)
So, did you expose the smarmy little weasel? |

Well, the other user pretended to be a disinterested party in judging the points made in an argument between the politician and me, so his wife wouldn't qualify. I also verified that the ip address is a residential cable service, so not an internet cafe or the like.
Right now I'm just playing with him a bit - I changed my avatar, and the pic in my sig, to something directed (humorously) at him, but only when the request comes from his IP address. So only he sees it. When he says something about my avatar and signature, people will think he's nuts. |

Ah yes, don't mess around with Jim extro.
Your method of acquiring IP addresses would be concerning if IP addresses really meant something. But it is interesting to see how these digital trails can be used in somewhat devious ways. I personally wouldn't mention your methods because not many people would understand how insignificant your actions were.

The message board in this case is somewhat closed to the public. It's geared toward a home owners association ... in retrospect something I see as a great blight upon our country, as it amounts to a form of government not bound by the Constitution.
