Here is my solution. It seems quite simple.

Label the wires 1 through 10. Connect the positive lead of the battery to the signal wire of coax 1. Connect the shield of coax one to the signal wire of coax 2. Connect the shield of coax 2 to the signal of coax 3 keep going until you connect the shield of coax 9 to the signal wire of coax 10. Finally connect the negative terminal of the battery to the shield of coax 10.

Now paddle out to the other island. Play around with the signal wires and the shields until you get the lightbulb to light. Congradulations! You just found coax 1 and coax 10 (it is obvious which is which, right?). Label them. Now connect the signal and shield leads together on coax 1. Now, keeping the shield of coax 10 connected to the light bulb, find the next signal wire, which when connected to the other terminal of the lightbulb causes it to light. You just found coax 2! Connect the signal and shields of coax 2 together and repeat the light bulb experiment in order to find coax 3. Keep going for coax 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. Coax 9 should be obvious.

heh I'd like to see you connect the shield and signal wires of 10 coax cables to each other with only a battery, a light bulb, and a pen. you forgot to add on all the trips back to the first island to check that your makshift wireing hasnt fallen apart!!!

PS. what if its 4pair UTP ?

HAHAHAHA I love it when people do that.

They were wires, not coax

OK. They were individualy shielded wires. The solution should still work.
