After reading this puzzle through, me and my friends came up with some very logical possible answers. One's far dissimilar from the actual answer of all that mathematical stuff. Now, if you can walk from home to the convention hall, also if your old enough to want a cane, it obviousely can't be a far walk right? So then give me one good reason why you can't either A) look out the window and see the clock tower or B) hear the clock tower chiming. And don't say "if he's old enough to need a cane he's old enough to be hard of hearing and half blind as well".

Maybe you carry a cane not because you need one but because you think it looks snazzy. Maybe the church tower is around the corner from your house, not visible from your kitchen window. And maybe you don't feel like waiting for the bells to chime the hour before setting your clock. That's *three* good reasons.

fourth reason: you assume the clock does chime which may not always be the case (don't recall if it said so in puzzle)
