As opposed to the solution given i think this one is faster. First put Ed and a human in the boat and take the human over then Ed returns for a monkey and takes it over. The next in line is another human and then another monkey. Then Ed returns for the last human and they both get off.
The sequence is as follows:
river bank boat destination

HHHEMM
HHMM EH
HHMM E H
HHM EM HM
HM EH HM
HM E HHM
M EH HHM
M E HHHM
EM HHHM
HHHEMM

When Ed returns there will be three monkeys on the near side.

Just to agree with James, It is not feasible that Ed and a Human go first, even if the problem of 3 monkeys on the first side was ignored, there are still more problems down the road. When Ed returns with the second monkey, there are 2 monkeys and 1 man on the far side. And finally, in step 6, when Ed returns to get the last human, there are again 2 monkeys and 1 human on the first side. sorry jack, doesn't work too well.

has anyone noticed that the puzzle states that there are 3 monkeys, but there are only 2 in the solution?
