The solution is as follows (max 3 moves required)

Move 1: Put your hand in the hole in front of you and flip the switch - if the chamber does not open switch it back to the way it was. Now keep your hand in the hole and put your hand in an adjacent hole and now there are two possible outcomes depending on
a) if the switch is in the same direction as the switch in the first hole - you should then switch both together (do not remove your hands yet!). If the chamber has still not opened switch the first switch back and remove your hands
b) if the switch is in the opposite direction as the first switch - flip the 2nd switch... if the chamber has still not opened - flip it back and remove your hands.
So now the chamber rotates and we begin move two.

There are only two possible arrangements left. We search for the first in this move and if that fails we use the last move to open the chamber for sure.

Move 2:Put your hands in two adjacent holes together. If the switches are in the same direction switch them both and the chamber WILL open. If it doesn't flip the switches back as they were and remove your hands.

Move 3:Put your hands in opposite holes and flip both switches (they HAVE to be in the same direction). The chamber opens.

This is exhaustive and move 2 and 3 may be interchanged - depending on your luck you might require two (or even 1 move!!).

Cheers

Dirus

Can anyone show a digram? Here's mine: wrap your legs around the column and (assuming you're a contortionist) attempt to turn upside down. Once you've done that, flip the switches like this, 0 an even number of flips, 1 an odd:
code:

0000, 0001, 0011, 0010, 0110, 0111, 0101, 0100

or you could simply check one switches position, flip it back, and then put all the switches in the position it had been in, and finally get off and flip the first switch. If you can feel the position the switches do #2, if you can't, do #1.

My sister knows the difference between a cantelope and a melon. True, there isn't a difference, but she knows what the difference is.

dirus, there's a flaw in your solution.
let's take for example the starting position of the switches are 1001.
Move 1, you get the first 2 digits: 1001
After your solution we should get 1001

Move 2, so happen you still get the first 2 digits but you don't know it.
After your solution we will still get 1001.

And clearly Move 3 will not solve it.

Ok, I've solved it now.

1st Move
Put your hands into any 2 adjacent hole. Switch them both up or down and if the chamber still doesn't open, put the left one down and the right one up. Now we're left with only 2 possibilies: 0101 or 0110 - always assuming we put our hands into the left digits.

2nd Move
Put your hand into a hole. Feel it. If it's a down, putting a hand into the hole on the right and finding a up switch won't make any sense as you've already know that. So put your hand into the hole on the left (remember you can put your arm around the pillar). If the left hole is a down too, then flip it and the chamber will open. If not then the arrangement must be a 0101 pattern, go on to Move 3.
Now if the first hole in Move 2 was up, then you put your other hand in the right hole. If it's the same then flip them to open the chamber else leave them alone and proceed to Move 3.

Move 3.
The only arrangement left is 0101, alternating switches. All you have to do is put your hand in opposite holes and open the chamber.

And yes, move 3 and 2 are interchangable just as Darius has said. But i think darius failed to mention in his solution that you should take careful note of the positions of the switches after Move 1 and decide carefully which holes to put your other hand into in Move 2. Other than that it's somewhat similar.

insert hands into two holes and flip both switches up.
remove hands and let it do it's thing....
insert hands in the two other holes and flip both switches up.
remove hands and enter chamber...

Based on the last instruction/ clue given:-
"Assume you can discriminate between holes after a spin without reaching into the column"
if you disagree, Paddy, please let us know!
