I'm confusd about this puzzle. It says 3 vaults have all counterfeits, while 3 vaults are untouched. But there are seven vaults. Does this mean that one vault has some fake and some real?

As has been discussed in the fairly lengthy thread on this puzzle, there is no unanimity in what this means. The most common interpretations have been these two:

1) The second "three" was a typo-- there are 7 vaults, 3 contain fake bars
2) The "seven" was a typo - there are 6 vaults, 3 contain fake bars

As it turns out, the "best" solutions to the puzzle for these two alternative interpretations follow the same reasoning.
