The correct answer is 4. The only way for there to be 9 distinct answers is if two people from the same couple both shake 4 hands each. One of these people is the professor since he didn't tally his own result, so all together the other nine responses were distinct. His wife therefore must have shook 4 hands also.
Some have mentioned that the puzzle states that there can't be anyone who shakes no hands at all, but I believe that this is just worded incorrectly in the puzzle. The only way for it to work is if one person shakes no hands at all. |
