I think it is a Vampire. Here's how:
He is not a friend of man, lover of the night, eschew's natural light(can be in sunlight), don't try to cross me(a Holy cross), that would cost me(he would be gravely hurt), I need you more than you need me(he needs us to survive), essence of yourselves I seize(take our souls), prolong my own final demise(so he lives forever), converting others to my kind(only a vampire can do this).

Yeah, I also think it's a vampire

however, 'Essence of yourselves I seize' (I would count that as the blood, not as the soul) but I agree on every other aspect

Yep,I think it's a vampire too.
But i didn't get the part about looking forth and aft and looking through the vampire. What does this signify? Some legend I'm not familiar with? Do tell.
