I will guess that the river from Greek mythology is "Styx" for the sole reason that I can't think of any others that fit the spaces.

You've already used X, in "Styx." And it doesn't look like it's shared with any other word.

What about the French phrase? The only other French phrases that I can think of are "Je Ne Se Qua" (sp?), which has too many E's; "Touche," which wouldn't seem to fit because "Styx" has used the T; and "Bon Jour," which seems to be too long. Any ideas?

i don't know much french so i won't get that part right. and if it is styx, then it might be lymph, nymph, or lynch for the 'y' (those are the only one's i know that don't need the 's'. so this means that the letters s,t,x,y, and h are used up.

the 5 (the one that ends with the 's' in styx) seems to need a vowel. the only 5-letter vowel-less words that end in 's' that i know of need the 'y' (myths, hymns, byrls, etc.) the 6-letter and the 2-letter words need vowel(s) also, but i don't think it means they have to share that vowel.

plz keep in mind that all my reasoning above is only true if lymph, nymph, or lynch is one of the words. i also believe that if we can figure out the french word, we can probl'y easily build from there.

I'm new here... I happened to guess the french phrase right the first time and it's not too hard from there. I'd feel guilty posting a huge clue or anything, but I'll just say that considering the lack of a large number of vowels in the alphabet, it's good to have them at places where words cross. When I realized the french phrase I'd thought of did that, I figured it must be the right one, and it was.

Being new here, if I've done anything wrong in this post, please beat me soundly.

Bearing in mind that QU will most likely start a word, and that the U almost certainly must have more than one use (in other words, it has to be part of a 'cross') we get the following possibilities :
