I'm thinking what we're looking for here is a joke answer - a pun, probably mentioning Bubba's name and "serenity", that maybe parodies a famous Zen quotation. Unfortunately, I don't actually KNOW any famous Zen quotations (other than that "one hand clapping" thing, which incidentally I can do with one hand, kind of a whip-like motion, looks weird, makes a silly clapping sound... but I digress...)

Anyway, a brief web search didn't turn up much to help either. Anyone out there know any Zen quotes that could be punned using the word "Bubba"?

Hopefully I'm not barking up the wrong tree (is that a Zen thing?)

Hmmm, now that I think more about it, maybe it's a pun of a common phrase, that uses the WORD "Zen" in it (As well as "bubba", and perhaps "serenity").

I can't imagine the puzzlemaker going for a serious Zen-like answer, because then where's the puzzle? Of course, just because I can't imagine doesn't mean a thing - it could very well be a serious answer. But if so I will be both disappointed and wrong...

Something along the :

"Stone walls do not a prison make
Nor Iron bars a cage"

Along with a comment that Bubba's still in a prison
of his own mind.

Now that's a sensible answer. Not much fun though.

I'm trying to think of another slant on it.

Maybe this man has something to do with the puzzle:

Adi Da

Notice that one of his names is Bubba Free John and another is Franklin Jones. He is also the controversial founder of the Laughing Man Institute.

Synonyms?

Desceased Yak = Dead

However the puzzle says Suffice it to say which implies he's paraphrasing
which in turn would tend to indicate that it's not relevant.

I'm sorry, I know this is not on the topic but can anyone please explain to me the description of the Mystic in the Gomez Logic puzzle ?(http://www.greylabyrinth.com/Puzzles/puzzle142.htm)

I don't want to look up the answer as I want to solve it, but the rule description for the Mystic doesn't make sense to me. When he makes 3 statements?? He does only two, and even if you consider "IF he made 3 statements", the truth values for his rule allow all possible combinations regardless of what others say; it's like the Mystic premise is tautological then, I might just as well pick the truth values for his statements randomly... I'm sure I'm misinterpreting something. In advance, thanks for help, and sorry again for being out of context.

Maybe it has something to do with changing the 'bb' to a 'dh.' Is there any meaningful connection to Buddhism that has the intials b.b. and d.h.?
Could you tell me that? Cause I'd lke to know!
I mean... what's the deal with Buddhism? Who are these people?

first of all, I think we all agree that Frank wants to get revenge on Bubba ect

personally, I think that I would have forgotten it after a the few weeks that past.

I think the best thing he could say is "no"

I really think that he wants to deliver some sort of apology to Bubba somehow. He feels bad about losing his temper and I assume that he still wants to be a Zen Buddhist. I did some research in some of my old World Religion textbooks and got zilch, but I feel I am on the right track. I think it may have something to do with one of the many koans that are taught. I've read about a hundred and feel close to converting myself, but I digress. I think it's an apology coupled with a good ol' dose of revenge mixed in for personal satisfaction in a Zen way. Am I close or WAY off track?

By the way, how about "What is the sound of one hand slapping Bubba really hard?"

This is really an inusual GL Puzzle.

Here are some patches of information about Zen I founded. Maybe they can help, maybe this is totally useless:

"One of the central points of Zen is intuitive understanding. As a result, words and sentences have no fixed meaning, and logic is often irrelevant. Words have meaning only in relation to who is using them, who they are talking to, and what situation they are used in. Some postings are indeed nonsense; other postings appear to be nonsense at first but this is because the meaning is all between the lines. Zen and poetry have gone hand in hand for centuries. "

.
.
.
This is all. And I think is all "wastable".

Huh? Are you guys being serious?? What kind of answer would that be?? I think Cha was probably kidding, at least a little.

I for one will VERY disappointed if "If You see Bubba, Kill him" turns out to be the answer!! I've come to expect a certain level of sophistication from TGL, and the answers are ususally satisfying. Geez, that better not be the answer!

I think that doesn't sound right, but it may be a fairly famous Buhdist quote. Dunno. I think the key factors in the answer will be:
Zen Buhdism
Bubba, perhaps a pun on Buhda
Frank
Laughter
Wisdom

I'm leaning towards something about "the middle path" as part of it. Perhaps Frank could be a pun on Frank or French?

So I'll say it's a Buhdist aphorism useing a pun for the "laughing bubba."

"If you meet Bubba on the road, kill him" is a pun on a famous Zen quote:

If you see the Buddha on the road - kill him ... a wise Zen saying

You can only truly 'see' the Buddha on the road when your mind becomes empty.

If the shift has happened then the Buddha represents a very real threat. The presence of the Buddha (ie teacher) is an unnecessary distraction. There will be a continuing temptation to focus on him as an "other", and as the source of wisdom and authority. This would undermine your confidence in what had been revealed to you; that in fact you are that source.

You have to kill the Buddha - NOT LITERALLY PLEASE! - but by leaving him and exorcising him from your psyche. You have to kill the Buddha and the pack of wolves surrounding him. The Buddha is not omniscient and he is a busy man. You have got to take responsibility for yourself now.

Hmmm...

Well, given this new info (The fact that "If you see Buddha on the road, Kill him" is a Zen quote), I suppose I partially retract my complaints about that being a lame answer. I guess Cha wasn't kidding, and very well could be right.

But, as I humble myself, I would like to point out that it was I who first said we were probably looking for a pun on a Zen Quotattion, using Bubba's name...

Considering that you are talking to your friend, who may or may not have a hatred towards Bubba, I would think your words would be tilting on
"This prison prevents you from doing something regretable, but outside it's only you that will stop such actions, otherwise you'll find yourself back in the bars of man and mind."
I'm thinking that since Frank freaked out after Bubba's comments, that his word of wisdom would be based on his actions and what he has learned from it.
Just a thought.

Not to troll too much here or anything, but it seems as if the quality of puzzles here has gone way down. I mean, what was this? Just some stupid pun on a saying hardly anyone is going to know. Or maybe there's another answer, but this really doesn't feel any better than those "what happened?" type mysteries, that are usually not very good. If you look back in the archives, you'll find some real good puzzles there. Nowadays, it seems all we get are cryptograms and this junk. As a former fan of this site, it would be nice to get some real puzzles again.
