Herman Mellvile, I think. But I can't get 1 or 3.
On second thought, I'm inclined to think that it has something to do with the letter as well. However, Moby Dick is there.

I'm sorry, but I'm completely lost with this one.
Could someone please explain how they are getting these answers? Thanks.
Sorry, but I've never seen a problem like this. |

| pokerfaced, try rearranging the words in each set and saying them out loud until you come up with something a bit more familiar sounding. And I agree with Dastal that Herman Melville is the right answer, although I still can't get number 1. |

By the way, (invisible)
Number 3 is Barchester Towers (Bar, Chest, Hurt, Hours) making the odd word Tier which makes me think the odd word in set 1 is Rye to give us:
Mow Bead Hick Rye Tier or (Moby Dick Writer = Herman Melville)
In spite of that I still can't get number 1! Good puzzle though.
<edit> Aha! 1 is Vile Bodies by Evelyn Waugh (Vial, Bode, He's). </edit>

For 1) The words may be homonyms for
bode -> bowed
rye -> wry
he's -> his
vial -> vile
for 3) words may change when each letter of them is shifted according to the alphabetical order.
For example, when each letter of "cold" is shifted by 3 letters, it becomes "frog".
(cold -> dpme -> eqnf -> frog)
In that way: tex (by 7 letters)-> ale
tex (by 22)-> pat
mow (by 18) -> ego
hay (by 8) -> pig
& hay (by 20) -> bus
That's the best I can do, if it helps. Oh, by the way, how do you "see" the "invisible" posts. Sorry, new here. Ta

| Nymphe: To see invisible text, just highlight the text. For any other questions you may have, check out the "UBB code is ON" link to the left of the reply box. |

my try on the answer is..
He's pecked chest oft king
1) "he's" <--my lucky guess
2) "pecked" is the onlyone with 2 vowels
3) "chest" is the only one w/o "r"
4) "oft" is the only one w/o a vowel
5) "king" is the only one w/o "a" |

| Nice! My first solve! I was looking for something which sounded like "the" in three, so I could say Moby Dick, The Whale which would confirm it, but Moby Dick Writer works as well. |

But there will be at least two, maybe three, new puzzles up today. Just for you. |
