Didn't like the reference, Mathgrant.

At the beginning of the day, six men were happy. But when one guy did his job, five men were left battered and beaten, and one guy was dead, and the shelf was still empty.

There's job satisfaction for you
Was the dead guy: one of the original 6 guys? One of the 5 battered ones? The one who did his job?

[invisibly morbid]The man who did his job was out of food, hence the empty shelf. He decided that if he became a martyr he could gain the favor of some god and thus have food provided for his family. He became a suicide bomber and injured the other 5.[/invisibly morbid]

The five guys that were beaten and battered - were they self inflicted wounds ? result of a car, train, plane accident ? beaten up by the now dead guy ?

Were the injuries a result of a fight ? Was the death a result of a fight ? If a fight, did the five (still alive) fight each other ? fight just the dead guy ?

The guy that did his job - fighter ? driver ? law enforcement ? military ? pilot ?

The shelf - in a grocery store ? in a truck ? in a house ?

Neo, that is 0.0% correct.

The five guys that were beaten and battered-were they self inflicted wounds? No
Result of a car, train, plane accident? No
Beaten up by the now dead guy?No

Were the injuries the result of a fight? No
Was the death a result of a fight? For arguments sake I'll say yes.
If a fight, did the five (still alive) fight each other? No
Fight just the dead guy?Yes

The guy that did his job-fighter?No
Driver?No
Law Enforcement?No
Military?No
Pilot?No

The shelf-in a grocery store?No
In a truck?No
In a house?Yes

I'm afraid I worded the puzzle a little wrong, so I'll fix that now.

The guy who did his job, did he do it well (i.e. successfully)? Incompetently?
Could you reword 'did his job' as 'completed the task he'd been given'?
Did the dead guy die in the house? Is the method of his death important?
Did the dead guy know the 5 other guys before the day in question?
Are the 5 guys named Moe?

Are there other poeple involved (aside from the original 6)?

Is this a sporting event ? gone wrong ?

Does beaten and battered refer to physical characteristic, or a figure of speech ?

Was the shelf suppose to hold a trophy ?

The guy that died - Was he working with the other 5 men ?
Against the other 5 men ?

Did all 6 men previously work together ?

Do they all do the same type of job ? For example, are they all football players ?
