Your Uncle McTeagle is having a contest. Somewhere hidden in McTeagle Manor is the still-uncashed check he received for winning first prize on The Gong Show all those years ago. (You remember, he did the thing with the chicken suit and the bouzouki?) First one among your kin to find the check gets to keep it. Fully familiar with Gresham's Law, you figure the intrinsic value of that check must far outweigh the $516.32 face value. Lustily, you call your favorite phone psychic for a bit of help. Invoking otherworldly forces, she mysteriously announces:

"Raise British capital, howl, and get smart."

Where is the prize?

Note -- You're not looking for a particular room of the manor; the answer is something much more specific.

"get smart" might mean to study, so it might be in the study. I guess British capital would be pounds. I don't know how that fits in with "study".

An obvious "favorite psychic" might be Miss Cleo...

(If you haven't heard them yet, listen to the Cleo pranks at http://www.ebaumsworld.com/morepranks.html )

British capital could also be London. That would be a bit sneakier!!!

British capital could also be the letter B, although that rather makes the "Raise" part more difficult. It could also be sterling but that doesn't seem to lead anywhere either. "Get smart" could be "learn"

I'm a big Get Smart fan, but I don't see a connection yet. I'll keep watching while people figure other stuff out, maybe I can help.

while on the subject of sitcoms, weren't there a Mr. and Mrs. Howl in "Gilligan's Island?"

There was, but I think it was spelled Howe. Don't hold me to that. Also, for Howl, all I can think of is "American Warewolf in London." Unfortunately, once I get a thought stuck in my head, it's hard to get past it.

Just a quick clarification -- The answer isn't a room in the "manor," but rather a very specific place where a check might be hidden.

PS - For all intents, it could be in the "study," as has been suggested, but we're looking for the nitty-gritty here!

Actually, the Gilligan's Islander's were the Howell's. I doubt that helps.

Don't wanna give up on this one. So, let's just say that the check is in fact in the "library." And what's in libraries, hmmm? Some of you are on the right track in your posts. Just put a few pieces together and you'll have the answer, right down to the very...

And I believe I get to say "bump" right about now.

We might, Suspence13, we just might. Well done. Call of the Wild is a pretty short read... I double-checked my copy (after posting this puzzle, duh), and was relieved to find that it had at least 86 pages.

Good puzzle, Mr. Bazbo, but can I ask what significance you intended by the word "raise" in your puzzle, or was it just to make us (or Chuck at least) think money instead of London?

I think raise was cryptic for Jack, as in when you replace a tire.
