I think this might be fairly easy, but let's see, shall we?
A couple weeks ago, my wife and I went over to our next-door neighbor's house and knocked on the door. When he answered, my wife grabbed him and dragged him onto the sidewalk. A while later, the rest of our neighbors congratulated us. Why? |

- Did your wife grab him to save him from something?
- Did you and your wife celebrate your anniversary
?

Any similarities between what I say and what I mean are purely coincidental. |

Was there something dangerous in the house, like a burgler, a fire, gas leak, vicious werebear, rising interest rates, recdeing hairlines?

Did your wife grab him to save him from something? Yes
Did you and your wife celebrate your anniversary? Why, yes, as a matter of fact, although that should be incidental to this puzzle.
Was there something dangerous in the house, like a burgler, a fire, gas leak, vicious werebear, rising interest rates, recdeing hairlines? Yes
Oh dear; even easier than I thought. |

| I would have immediately guessed a gas leak. Is that it? |

A vicious Werebear with a receding hairline, enraged by rising interest rates, tried to steal the stove from the house. He accidentally set himself on fire with the leaking gas. This is what everyone was trying to save the woman from.
Wow, that was easy!

Did YOU know what your wife was doing when he grabbed the guy?

If not, why did your neighbors congratulate you too?

This is what everyone was trying to save the woman from. No, but amazingly close! Particularly with the "vicious Werebear" part. (small joke here)
Wow, that was easy!Yes
Did YOU know what your wife was doing when he grabbed the guy? Yes and no, depending on how specific you meant.

Did the neighbors congratulate you because the grabbed neighbor is generally disliked, and your wife slapped him around a bit?
Was it a fire then?
Did the neighbor know there was danger in his house?
Could he have escaped had you not been there? |

Was he on fire? No, but...
Did the neighbors congratulate you because the grabbed neighbor is generally disliked, and your wife slapped him around a bit? Welll...no
Was it a fire then? yes
Did the neighbor know there was danger in his house? Maybe
Could he have escaped had you not been there? Yes....Maybe
And the answer to this astoundingly easy lateral is that, yes indeed, the house was on fire, and we likely woke him up by "knocking" on the door. (Since this is a real-life lateral, "likely" is the most certain I can be.) Other answers should follow from there. |
