I hope that this won't be taken the wrong way, but a lot of people posting to the GL are still making various elementary spelling mistakes.
I've tried to make allowances for the fact that many people are posting in their non-native tongue. I also recognise that the English and American spellings of the same word can often be different. Recognise and recognize being just one example.
Here are the 'top five' errors that I've seen lately:
their - some people stick to the 'i' before 'e', except after 'c' rule and write thier. This is the best-known exception to the rule.
lose, losing - Ususally confused with loose, meaning 'not tight'.
suspicion - vital for a Mafia game.
parallel - important in puzzles and discussing universes. Not parellel.
relevant and irrelevant - I used to get these wrong myself (-vent, not -vant) but I've used them so much in various GL debates that it's drummed into my head now.
If this helps anyone, then I'm glad. If it offends anyone, then I apologise, but I hope it's seen as constructive criticism rather than an insult. Please don't use this thread to quote individuals' mistakes. And Antrax, please don't let JeffK see this thread.
(Edited to try to sound less patronising, but without much success. I'll just have to live with the consequences.)

And closely following that at number 6
Usually - doesn't happen often but some people stick in a second 's' after the second U to get Ususally.
Thankfully, all those in this thread are above such elementary errors |

I did a Google search for "revelant" and got 8,480,000 hits. The Internet promotes poor spelling. We should all stop using it.
Even "Google" is a misspelling of "Googol". The search engine people can't even spell the name of their own company. |

You forgot Pheonix for Phoenix..
And you're for your (and vice versa).
I know I have the tendency to spell already as alreday - but that's just the speed of typing, and somehow I have a blind spot for this typo. |

| Many crimes against the art of the apostrophe are committed in the improper forming of possessive nouns and pronouns. |

| I am probably one of the main people here who mis spells words, but i find it harder to write in another language than to speak it. I am quite fluent in speaking German, English, French and Danish but when it come to writing in these languages my mind takes on another dimension. I am trying to get better though and would welcome any hints on any mistakes i make. |

well...capitalizing your 'I's when speaking of oneself is a nice start
But I completely understand what you mean though... Even after speaking (american) English for an entire I still make the same errors, especially when writing...
One of mine in speaking is mix up people and persons, and comparison and comparision

I am with you in this, Zesty & Jestern.
I have extremely bad problem with tenses, especially with have, has, & had.
I know what the proper rules are but they're just not natural to me,
so if I don't paid attention I can really goofed up a sentence.

I think "Finger of Supsicion" is intentional by a lot of posters in mafia. It started as an unintentional typo, and became embedded in mafia lore. I also consciously misspell suck in the phrase "It sukcs" or equivalent as well. As for words like coloUr and honoUr , well - what can I say. The kindest thing one could do for Webster would be to have him euthanazed.

I keep seeing the non-word rediculous all over the internet and usenet (it's ridiculous).
And people who spell viruses as either viri or, even sillier, virii. |
