| What's up Rodneylips, I'm interested not only to make a dicision with you, but also to find out why you chose that name? As you can see from the list, I could use as many points as your willing to spare, but because you are obviously better at this game than I you get to make the offer first. I'll hopefully hear back from you soon. |

| Aiden, Yea your right 50/50 is fair but I was wanting to convince you of giving me a boost. The only power I have is to deny us both points, in which case I believe hinders the one with a more likely chance to reach the top. Don't get me wrong, I just want to elevate you a fair amount and give me a chance in the last challenge. What would you say to a 60/40 split?thats 300 for me and and 200 for you. 200 is plenty to put you near the top. Since I am not at the bottom of the list I don't need as many points. Those at the bottom should be looking for a 90/10 split or nothing at all. That is the only way they have a chance in the last round. The top people are obliged to grant their request because they need to stay competitive and getting 0 pts hurts them tremendously. |

Mr. Orc, once Aiden has offered, there is no discussion. No 'threats' to block so to speak. Aiden, if it was not your intent to offer 50/50, then I suggest you do make your offer. One of the aspects of this challenge is that you don't 'haggle'. You have to try to second guess your companion and offer enough so that you get some, and he gets some, but of course you want your share to be as large as possible.
More guessing games! |

Firemeboy,
It seemed to me that Aiden didn't offer. He/She did an excellent job of letting me know what was fair without offering. I thought we were disscussing terms of the offer. Did it constitute an offer? Can we still negotiate?
Aiden, If we can still negotiate, then I will ask the questions and you only reply yes or no, that way you won't accidentally make an offer. Then, make the official offer. Sound good? |

| Steel City, I think you can see from the posts, that there are a lot of people offering a 50/50 split (I would refuse, too), remember what you offer the FIRST time is the final offer. Everyone has made good arguments and I am very low in the standings while you are quite near the top. Also, I remember you saying something along the lines of you wanting all of us to be "keepers" and then you signed on as a "taker". Make me a good offer. |

| vlost, I think that in this challenge getting points is key. I know you can refuse the offer and neither one of us would get any points, so, in order for me to get some points out of this, here is my offer to you: a 60/40 split, with you receiving 60 or (300 pts) and I would recieve 40 (200 pts). I think that is a reasonable offer to accept. |

| lambie, sorry I took so long to respond. I will make you my offer later sunday afternoon. It will no doubt be in your favor. You were half right in your comment. I did sign on as a taker, but never once did I ever say I was going to be a keeper. I mentioned getting a majority of the class and then voting one way or the other. I put my email address for people to cooperate and I had no responses. |

| also lambie, after the first challenge, where there was absolutely no cooperation, is not the time to start working as a group. If we were going to work as a group we had to work as a group on every challenge. Once everyone splits up on one challenge it is useless to work as a group. Now that we know no one is working as a group, other than a few of the partners are splitting which is a fair thing to do, I am as happy in last place as I am in second. Whether I have 10000 points or 10 points I think my grade will be the same for this internet project. |

Lambie
I know you have total control of this challenge and I think that you would also like to recieve some points. I will offer you 300 and I will take 200. This way you make a substantial gain on everyone in the class. Being a mom and all, you have probably already or will in the near future teach your kids about sharing, I hope you don't teach them....... by taking away their candy.

Well to put it frankly I'm quite surprised! I've never seen the proposers offer more money than they are keeping. Usually the sentiment is that 'I'm ahead so if you don't accept, you'll still be behind me...' I'm quite surprised that people are giving out more than they keep. Usually it's a 50/50 split, or somebody tries to offer less money. Though several of you have been 'bending' the rules by saying you won't accept anything less than X amount. Oh well, all is fair in love and Internet games...
There are still several who have not offered, please do so quickly and we will move on to the last challenge.

Steel City,
The best way to teach is by example. In all of my posts since the first challenge, I have said as much. I have always given my son the larger share of my love, time, effort, and attention, and I will continue to do so. You should know that sometimes, you have to take the candy away or there will be tummy aches (I am that mom, of course.) You are correct, I think everyone who has activly participated in this should get a good grade, if they turn in thier essay on this experiment. But, think, haven't we acheived some level of cooperation at this point? Most of the folks who are making offers are making good ones. I haven't seen anyone refuse and I haven't seen any totally unrealistic ones made. This has sort of turned into a exercize in moderation. Everyone has moderated their behavior to be acceptable to the each other within the group, caving in to pier pressure, one might say. At the same time, what choices did we have? You could have offered 50/50, or less, as Marion said the last group did, however, you are making your offer in such a way as to keep as many points as you can (knowing you are probably far enough ahead that it wouldn't matter anyway.) That is no more or less selfish than anything I have said, or done.
Your offer is very fair and I do accept it. Got to go tuck the kiddie in now--

Still waiting on a few people, but I'm going to go ahead and post the last challenge.
Is anybody aware of the prisoner's dilemma? Here is a good site about the problem.
http://www.princeton.edu/~mdaniels/PD/PD.html
You can try the game against the computer a few times if you want.
You will be paired with a fellow player that will remain anonymous. Simply send me an e-mail and let me know if you confess or remain silent. Remember, if your partner remains silent, and you do as well, you will win big. If they confess, and you remain silent, you will lose.
Here is the score.
Both remain silent - + 300
Both confess - + 100
One confess/One silent +500 (for the one that confessed), and -100 (for the one that remained silent.)
Let me know if you have any questions, but the page above should answer most quetions.
Good luck.
Marion

Steel City,
Did you notice that you were still so very high in the standings? You did not suffer from your generosity in the last challenge, thank goodness! I have really gotten a kick out of this online discussion and I think that it would have made a great realtime excercise when there would be no delay in the cooperation coeficient. I think that the results would have been very different.

| Firemeboy, I'm obviously didn't follow the rules of the game for challenge four. I was waiting to recieve an e-mail from you telling me who my partner was, but you would keep that information secret from everyone else. So I kept waiting to recieve more information and it appears that challenge four is now over because my name isn't on the last score list. I thought the partner I was going to be pared up with was going to have to discuss about the challenge and through those discussions try to see which method he was going to chose. Please let me know what I can do to still participate in this challenge. |

Well, I'm still tallying the final results, but they are certainly interesting. I've once again paired those who were near the top with those who were near the bottom. The people in the bottom generally are trusting and have hence remained silent, while those at the top got there for a reason (they trust no one! ) and have henced confessed. It appears that those on the top will remain on the top, and those near the bottom will reamin such.
Remember, this is by no means saying that the ones near the bottom have 'failed', or the ones near the top have succeeded. Measuring sticks are completely relative so don't fret over the results. |

Results. Please note! I hope that one thing you have learned from this class is that reliable communication and the Internet are not guaranteed. If you sent me a score, and I didn't post it, then chances are the e-mail got lost somewhere between your server and mine. I'm sorry if I've figured your score wrong, but nobody lost or recieved extra points for thier place in this challenge.
OK, here they are:
code:
