some concepts:

all nouns in spanish are either feminine or masculine. In most cases, a noun ending with "a" (e.g. 'casa') is feminine, but not always (e.g. 'dia')

El = "the" for masculine nouns
La = "the for femine nouns

por ejemplo.

La casa y el hospital son edificios.
The house and the hospital are buildings.

verbs in spanish changes depending on the subject who is committing the action.

Por ejemplo:

the verb hablar (to talk) has the following conjugation:

Yo Hablo ..... I talk
Tu Hablas ..... you talk
él Habla .... he talks
Ellos Hablan ..... they talk
Nosostros Hablamos ..... we talk

"I ask you for it" or "I beg you" or something sort of like that. IIRC.

(Note that I'm not an actual Spanish speaker, so all advice and answers of mine here are highly likely to be wrong.)

mathgrant: Abuela, and I knew that on my own.

Monique, "pido" is the yo form of perdir, which means "to ask, request, demand"
"lo" = him, it. (depending on the context of the sentence). Te lo Pido = "I ask you for it"

Lo escuche (how do I do the accent above the ;e'?) en una cancion, pero no lo comprendi.
I heard it in a song, but I didn't understand it.

we'll get to past tense later.

Important verbs

Ser
Estar

Both of these verbs mean "to be", (am, is, are).

You use Ser when you're discussing the being of something,
You use Estar when you're discussing the condition of something.

One way to look at it, Ser is used with permanency, while Estar is used with changable stuff.

The conjugation of Ser and Estar
-------------------------------
Ser
Yo soy .... I am
Tu eres .... you are
Ella es .... she is
Ellos son ... they are
Nosotros somos ... we are

Estar
Yo estoy
Tu estas
él esta
Ellos estan
Nosotros estamos.

Examples:

Yo soy un hombre.
I am a man.

Ella esta enfermo.
She is sick.

a little advice:

when learning any language, it is natural to automatically memorize and translate the foreign words to your native language. But you'd learn a lot quicker if you lose that habit, to use sights and sounds instead of sematics. So when I say "uno, dos, tres," don't translate it in your mind to "one, two, and three," instead, think of the numbers 1, 2 , and 3. When I say "gato" don't think of the english word "cat", pick a memory of a cat and have that flash in your mind instead.

This is very difficult when you first learn the language, and the process of translating foreign words to your own language is very helpful, and necessary. But as you advance and your vocabulary increases, do try to put away that habit. Eventually you can think and dream in the new language, that's the ultimate goal.

Who wants to give this a try?

Pick the correct verb (ser or estar) and conjugate it appropriately.

1. Tu ___ bonita y intellegente.
You are beautiful and intelligent.

2.Ella ___ muy contenta hoy dia.
She is very happy today.

3. Senor Internet Stranger no __ tonto.
Mr. Internet Stranger is not stupid.

Huey: To get the accent on the e, check to make sure Num Lock is turned on, then hold down the Alt key while typing 0233 on the number pad at the right. Which is how I got this: é

For any other special character, just do the same, and use trial and error to find out what to type. (It will be something in the range of 0000 to 0255.)

Real answer to the third question: es. But mathgrant's answer amuses me...

You can cheat, and copy and paste the accented letters from earlier posts -- that's what I do.

Perdóneme, Profesor Huey, but I think the 3rd-person masculine singular is él, not ello. The 3rd-person masculine plural is ellos.
