I've always considered the GL (Grey Labyrinth) to be the KGDB (Kinder, Gentler Discussion Board) so maybe someone can enlighten me without making me feel too NAS (Naive and stupid)?


RTFM is one that is given when an answer could be found by reading a manual. I am assuming it can only be used when the manual is Fine, or Free.
I work in retail and we call buy one get one BOGO. And of course loss prevention is always dealing with BOSO.
if I'm bargain hunting I'd look for B1G1 (buy 1 get 1 free) or MR (manufacturer's rebate) or MIR (mail in rebate). I suppose it's like jargon in RL.


I happen to drive a 1988 Buick POS, and in this usage, it doesn't stand for point-of-sale.

Just thought I'd give you the reasons for the last four acronyms you give:

TIC Tongue in cheek
TLA Three letter acronym (also FLA)
TTFN Ta ta for now
YMMV Your Mileage May Vary

It's because those are the letters that the words in the phrases start with .

To be a bit more helpful (if I'm right in what you are asking for ..) TIC means (approximately) not really being serious ("with insincerity, irony, or whimsical exaggeration " from the MW dictionary); TTFN means goodbye (TT) see you soon (FN); don't know YMMV, beyond a totally literal interpretation, which is not what is meant, I don't imagine.

Oops, I forgot TLA (4LA). Because there are lots of silly TLAs in the computer world, which don't actually help at all, e.g. VDU being 3 syllables, compared to 1 for screen.

I always liked the computer support line acronym - POBCAK. "Problem occured between chair and keyboard".

OK, Tom. I got your point. I don't know how to express myself in English (sidenote: I don't know it in Romanian either ). BUT i truely want a logical explanation for:

Why do i ask? Because "because" as in "b/c" is not made up from two separate words as "pd", and because none of the other acros have a slash ("/") in them.

Well, "because" may be only one word, but it is 2 syllables, one starting "b", one "c", so b/c is phonetically quite easy to understand. I guess a slash is used because it is a phonetic abbrevaiation, rather than a true acronym. But all this stuff is fairly ad hoc .. these things are essentially internet slang, so there are no hard and fast rules.

w/o is without, that's ok .. then once everyone recognises that, it is obvious what w/ means (with). j/k again is a phonetic abbreviation; I always thought it meant "joking", but it may well be "just kidding". Doesn't really matter, does it?

(You've learnt English; surely you know the futility of trying to find sensible rules for it . How do you pronounce the word "ghoti"? "gh" from laugh, "o" from women, "ti" from nation .. so it's pronounced "fish".)

Plus a lot of these are specific to whatever group you are around. For example, if I'm about to play a video game called age of kings, I'd call it AoK and i'd use m@a and say GL HF and all sorts of other cute acronyms. Or if I'm bargain hunting I'd look for B1G1 (buy 1 get 1 free) or MR (manufacturer's rebate) or MIR (mail in rebate). I suppose it's like jargon in RL, acronyms abound everywhere and they're not all universal, so it's really helpful when you get a newbie around and you help him out with the tricky language of your group.
