I was reading Sam's thread about death and it got me thinking on the use of the afterlife as a form of societal control, a long term carrot and stick idea. What are the thoughts of the GL at large on this matter?

I thought it fit with the culture bit. I think it is more of a question for here as opposed to OT as it has more of a bearing to culture than general rif-raf. Move it to OT if you think it is better suited there.
