Here's one thing I never quite understood, what exactly is postmodernism? I mean, I've gathered it was some sort of cultural movement in reaction to modernism, and something to do with art being made for its own purpose, but being the layman that I am such a description completely throws me. What I'm mainly concerned with is the philosophy behind the movement, so if anyone would be so kind as to point me in the right direction that'd be great.

A simplified version:

Post-modernism is a reaction on Modernism. The axiom of Modernism was that you should do something new, the old was not good enough. The reaction to this (Post-Modernism) states that whatever you liked from the past, you can use in the new art.

Or you can go with Moe Syzlak's definition: "Weird for the sake of weird."
