Vader: Death Angel are cool. The just released a new albulm Must admit my metal knowledge deserts me on killing joke though
Paige: First of all. Welcome to the GL, have a frog (but a hardcore metal loving frog ). I have only heard songs from October Rust for Type O Negative so I will base my opinion on that. They are very gothic in musical nature and as such fall out of what I normally listen to. Soundgarden are more on the trail end of grunge, so also out of my frames of refference. Mushroom makes me think of "Badger Badger Badger".

LOT: Death Angel released a NEW album? When? and how can I get my hands on it? Killing Joke have had many sounds over the years and the best was the early years I highly recomend that era, mid 80's.
Paige: Type O is one of my favorites, they are Metal but not what LOT is going for. Soundgarden IMO was very over rated, had a good song or three, but as a whole just okay. Chris is a very good vocalist and I happen to like his latest project.

I must fervently disagree with Tenshi. The Gathering are one of the finest, most accomplished bands of any genre performing today. Anneke van Giersbergen posseses the BEST female rock voice on this planet. I saw them at the Middle East in Boston; they were phenomenal. Of course, it doesn't help that I'm sort of madly in love/lust with Anneke... |

Sorry if you don't agree with me but I was asked for an opinion. When one of my favourite bands is grind core and the other is death metal my love of techno takes a back seat. But on the other hand, have you heard the new release by Avril (the french trip-hop fellow, not the dodgy punk princess)?

So you do not like The Gathering, let's try another metal band with female vocalist: Finlands Nightwish. What's your opinion? |

OMG. nightwish... Nightwish... NIGHTWISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am currently in a bit of a fanboy phase with them. I don't know a whole lot about them but I have rips of about 7 of their cd's on my computer that play constantly at the moment. I love how they have the opera vocalist teamed up with the metal band, it just works.
Wanderlust and Romanticide and planet hell and devil and the dark ocean and sacrament of wilderness....
They are just plain good. _________________ Tech support sucks |

What do you think of Progressive Metal? Maybe it's not really metal but I was wondering your opinion on bands like
Dream Theater
Stratovarious
Pain of Salvation
Where would you classify "Faith No More"? They are one of my favorite bands and I've always considered them Heavy Metal but they don't necessarily fit in your descriptions. |

I had never heard of them, but I was listening to some CD's in the shop this weekend while Bambi was browsing the art magazines. One of the CD's was by Nightwish. I found the samples so interesting that I bought the CD (Once) and I must say it's fantastic. Can't wait to pick up more of theor work. |

Done. Wanted to make a small correction from a professional drummer: the word you want is "bass" as in, the "lowest drum in pitch".. not "base". Better still to call it the kick drum, which is more commonly accepted nowadays... |

Phil, my ability to spell is inversely proportional to my ability to understand what is going on. Any corrections are welcome.
Thunder, I would say 'Faith no more' would come under the same sort of bracket as some of the harder Foo Fighters work. Hard Rock. They are thumpy and all that but not quite in the same vein as metal. If you have a listen to Nightwish, InFlames, Death Angel and Metallica. While the vocalisation is wildly different (Opera to Demonic Grunting) the music has a very similar feel. That feel is (at least for me) present in anything I call 'metal', although it is quite possible that for you they do come under the bracket of metal, so it is quite objective (I think that is the right word).
With the Prog stuff you listed, I will drag it out of my MP3 archive tonight and have a listen. I gennerally only keep about 4-5 gig on my compy at any one time.
Guest, the term was originally used by William S Burrough in 'The Soft Machine'. He had a character called 'Uranium Willy, the heavy metal kid' that was into a heavily underground music and drug scene, which in its entirety was called heavy metal. It was a movement to get away from the real and oppressive world for a while. Black Sabbath contrary to popular belief was not the first metal band due to Ozzy Osborne's claim 'We aint heavy metal, we are just a rock and roll band'. I would say that the first Heavy Metal band would be Judas Preist. (Thank God for triple J's Full Metal Racket metal trivia quiz ) _________________ Tech support sucks |

Thunder: Ok. I just finnished listening to some music. I am not going to listen to any more prog metal for a very long time. I am curently listening to some Finntroll to purge me of those 'epic song demons' (out, out, you foul demons!).
The first on my hit list was Dream Theater. I listened to about 18 minutes worth of cobbled together covers from pink floyd and others and it hurt. They seem to be trying to hard to be arty and they seem at least to me to be trying the sonic youth method of 'keep throwing till something sticks'. I heard someone describe a recent sonic youth concert called a self indulgent arty wankfest. It just goes on and on. I heard that on one of their newer albulms there is a track around the 40 minute mark . No thank you. I like my metal short, fast and loud. Ten minute tops. 'Beauty of the beast' by Nightwish is on the long end of bareable.
Next, stratovarius. Hmmmmm...... I have a few tracks from Elements part 1 as my tool of review here. They do have a quite potent musical attack and they certainly are progressive and tricky. But what is it with the vocalists voice. I normally crank up the volume when listening to metal but it was painful to listen to him wail higher than the peak of Tarja Turunen's range in 'Phantom of the opera'. They have definate pontential if they drop their vocalist.
I actually don't have any Mp3's of Pain of Salvation's work so the jury is out until I track some down.
I think that some Prog is metal but not all. The trickyness of bands like emporer is quite cool in small doses and is definately metal. Dreamtheater, like I alluded to strikes me more as a selfindulgent wankfest than music and Stratovarius has great potential (it is always possible that albulm was a shocker for them).
DP: I will get in touch with Jurgen (a friend from Germany who supplies my brother and I with European metal) to get some Queensryche and I will get back to you on it.
Oh, and also DP. Get your hands on 'Victory or Valhalla' by Ancient Rites. It is very cool. And also 'Troll Hammeren' and Jaktens Tid' by Finntroll. Great Viking metal _________________ Tech support sucks |

And there was I thinking Queensryche were the Yankee Band originating from the early 80's.
Are you sure it's not the same Queensryche who supported 'Dio' back in 84/85-ish? |

Queensryche.
Indeed a US band.
Coming more from a prog rock background, I like prog metal. Then again, from that background, 10-20 minute songs are not that rare. |

Personally Queensryche is one of my all time favorites. Up until Hear in the New Frontier CD anyway. From the first moment I heard them-openeing fro Metallica back in 88 or so-I was hooked.
Dream Theater I like. I loved their first CD with Pull me Under(Tenshi I suggest you take a listen to that song) but the CD's after that I agree with Tenshi a little too artsy.
Side note I saw both Queensryche and Dream Theater, Queesryche was the openining act, in the summer of 03. Amazing show. I love when there are good vocalists on top of thier game.
Faith No More is an enigma in my opinion. They have some heavy tunes, i.e. Suprise you're Dead & Mid Life Crisis, then they have some off the wall tunes, i.e. the Crab Song(I believe that is the name) and The Morning After. They are all the above Metal, Prog. Rock and out of the Norm( as I don't know how else to describe the sound). _________________ Duct tape is like the force they both have a light side and a dark side and they bind the universe together. |

Jadesmar: I suggest you listen to the song. When Pink Floyd did it it was arty, when they did it it was a try hard cop out.
Vader: Fear Factory, to me, is industrial. They have quite a few songs I like and I was impressed by their latest offering. I especially like the song "Man is obselete' (I think that is the name). Not a band I could listen to constantly but they hit far more than they miss. (By miss I mean Cars ) _________________ Tech support sucks |

Fear factory.. industrial, really?
And what's with the Slayer bashing? They were the only ones that didn't make my ears bleed.
OK, on to my question. Back it the 80's/early 90's metal singers seemed to try to imitate the guitar play in singing style, occasionaly giving the impression of trying to sound threatening after being kicked in the gonads. So I happen across metal two decades later, and the singers (well, singers might be overstating things) seem to do nothing but grunt towards the mic. Are my observations correct? If so, what caused the radical change in singing style?
Oh, and how did Satan get associated with the genre to begin with? _________________

I can see the industrial lable there but I feel they are more metal than indutrial. I happened to like their version of Cars. I like the song Replica from their Demanufature CD the best another one of my all time favorite tunes.
If I may try to answer Termital. The singing style , like everything else evolves. I think that this was comming around in the mid 90's and just really took off in the past 3-4 years. Personally I like the mid range singers that can hit the high notes for emphasis not just because they can. Like James Hetfield before Load.
Satan has always been branded with Rock from the very begining and when Metal evolved with the Evil undertones it was just a logical thing to have happen. I would say thoug that the song War Pigs from Black Sabbath would be a good root for this though, even though Ozzy has said they were not a Metal band, they have and still influence most Metal bands. _________________ Duct tape is like the force they both have a light side and a dark side and they bind the universe together. |
