Why is Anime?
Animé is because Japanese artists needed a new style of drawing that was easy and inexpensive. It's fanbase spawned immediately.
Which is Anime?
Animé is the style of drawing depicted in the following images:
1. 2. 3.
1. Asuka, from Neon Genesis Evangelion
2. Sango(left) and Miroku(right), from Inu Yasha
3. Il-Pallazo, from Excel Saga
When is Anime?
Animé is usually show on Cartoon Network at different times throughout the day. The most I know of are Monday through Thursday nights between Midnight and 2am or so, and Sunday Night, 1-2am. Also, a channel named "The Animé Network" is on 24/7. Too bad my stupid Cable provider doesn't carry it.
...and you thought I wouldn't answer those

Why does everyone in anime have some sort of super powers or fighting ability?
Actually, that's not always true. In Maison Ikkoku, The story revoles around tenants in an apartment building, and the very faint hints of love between the two main characters. In YuYu Hakusho, the main character has died, and is a spirit trying to return to his body. In A.I. Love You, the main character is a computer whiz who sucks at sports and school. In Excel Saga, well, uh, (how sould I put this? Oh, yes.) they're all idiots.
Other than the love stories or comedy genres of animé, there's action, which makes up a large percentage. But there's still quite a bit of animé without fight scenes in them. |

Heh.
A, uh, strategic Google image search will give you some pretty nice pics. I suggest not naming characters of Animé that you've seen or want to see, as this will screw up the show for you. But, since you insist...
Note: There's nothing too obsene in the links below.

What's the difference between Anime and Manga?
Manga is animé in "graphic novel" form. Mangas are usually black and white, about 3/4 of an inch thick, and most read right to left, unless the translators "flipped" the art. The reason I separated the Animé and Manga into two categories is most Manga have different stories than the Animé equivalent.
Is Hentai an adult form of Anime? Or are they different but with similar artists?
I believe that Hentai is Animé for adults, yes.
Extro needs Hentai.
You're probably right.
Asuka has big eyes.
That she does. |

They wanted more profit. Duh.

*rolls eyes* Probably Nabiki Tendo from Ranma 1/2. I dunno why.
following on from zeek's post, why do anime characters have such enormous eyes?
It's just a style that most animators have adapted to. I guess it's because most emotions can be spotted out by looking at the eyes alone.
Are tentacle rape and hentai synonymous in you mind?
No.

Both of the shows you mentioned are Animé. Animé is the type of drawing, movements of the characters, and other qualities, such as this:
http://carnage.fanfic.org/franmove.gif
That is Animé, based on the low amount of frames used, the movement back and forth, the huge eyes and mouth, and the big ovals representing his feet. |

no it's not
Actually, I believe in Japanese, there's supposed to be a strong accent on the last syllable. American transliterations of foriegn words can have different spellings and still be correct. (Just look at Hanukah/Channukah/Hanuka/Hannukka for an example.)

I fall in Group A, although I did like the very little bit of Dragonball that I saw. |

Why do some people find anime entertaining?
This is really a number of questions all squished into one.
Why is anime entertaining?
For the same reason any television program or movie is entertaining. A story is told, and people like hearing/reading/seeing stories.
Why animation as opposed to live-action?
The first part of the answer here is simply, "why not?" You can tell a story, develop characters, and build a world using animation. The rest of the answer deals with the couple of things that are easier to do using animation. 1) There are fewer limitations on your world - there is no impossible set or costume. 2) It's less expensive. Much less expensive.
Why anime as opposed to other kinds of (American) animation?
I think at some point Americans stopped treating animation as a real storytelling form - Disney movies and animated series were things for children, not for any serious purpose. Japanese animation still drew creative people interested in telling stories to developed minds, though. No one who's seen Lain, Cowboy Bebop, or Akira would consider for a second that it was written for children.
Why do some people fail to find anime interesting?
There are two main reasons. First, it just doesn't cut it for some people - they have varying tastes. A lot of people aren't interested in epic fantasy novels, or even fantasy novels in general, or even fiction. It just doesn't suit them. The second reason (probably more prevalent) is that people just don't give it a chance. They grew up watching the Smurfs and Scooby Doo, and they know all cartoons are just for children, and refuse to suspend their convictions long enough to test their opinions. |

Uhh... I guess cartoons can do things that real people can't.
What sort of qualifications do you have to answer questions about Hentai for us?
I've seen a lot of it.
Why do some people find anime entertaining?
Because, when using Animé, you can act things out that would take a lot of money and computer animation, without the hassle of the tons of money or the computer animation. Take FLCL as an example. Within the first episode alone, the main character gets hit with a Vespa (motorbike), hit with a guitar twice, has two robots (well, one and a half) spout out of his head, is knocked unconscious, is pulled up to the top of a bridge, and then slammed down to the road. And he lives to do this for five more episodes. That would be quite a bit of computer animation, and tons of money, in live action.
Are all the jokes I make about Japanese penis tentacle rape cartoons in Neo Tokyo exaggerations, or are there really many... pieces(?) dealing with such subjects?
Uh... I'll assume Neo Tokyo is an Animé that I've not heard of.
There are quite a lot of tentacle rape pictures on the internet, as well as a few sites dedicated to these types of pictures.
Thank you to extro, for helping to answer some of these questions.

I'm not talking about the internet. Many movies occur in a post-apocalyptic tokyo, and common internet humour teaches us that most anime has at least one penis tentacle rape scene. However, of the movies I've seen (about 10), not a single tentacle penis was to be found (though there were some cool bees and a snake lady). So I'm curious if it's just a myth, or if I'm not hardcore enough. You can find anything on the interent.

None of the animé I've seen even has any sexual scene other than grabbing someone's breast or butt. I highly doubt that even 1% of all non-hentai animé shows has anything more obsene than what I've seen so far.
Edit: No, there was some more sexual activity in Evangelion: audio of a couple making love while a stillshot of the dresser (not really screaming, just a little moaning), and, well, the first 5 minutes of the Eva movie is kinda disturbing.

Actually, Aga, bigger eyes are easier to put more expression into... I think.
Which do you personally think was better, Nadesico or Evangelion? (and yes, I have seen both)
Why haven't you explained "thermal expansion" yet?
Which of these was worse (in each case):
Constantly falling over in Pokemon or constantly screaming like crazy madmen in DBZ
Hamtaro sound effects or Hamtaro facial expressions
Actual tentacle raping or the Weebl and Bob spinoff

FINALLY! AN ACTUAL ANIMÉ QUESSTION!
Which do you personally think was better, Nadesico or Evangelion? (and yes, I have seen both)
While I enjoy the whole mystery aspect of Eva, I enjoyed Nadesico more. The love triangles (or is it a septagon?) in Nadesico were hilarious, Izumi's attempts at puns crack me up every time, and Ruri is the best character in anything I've seen, including live action stuff.
Why haven't you explained "thermal expansion" yet?
Uhh... (must be an inside joke I'm missing here.)
Which of these was worse (in each case):
Constantly falling over in Pokemon or constantly screaming like crazy madmen in DBZ
Definately the screaming. I didn't really mind the falling over.
Hamtaro sound effects or Hamtaro facial expressions
Uh... *kushikushi* I liked Hamtaro. I have both of the Game Boy games.
Actual tentacle raping or the Weebl and Bob spinoff
The weebl and bob comic of this is hilarious. Ine of the best. And, since I don't really like tentacle rape stuff anyway, I'll say that the weebl and bob cartoon is better. |
