Your first problem is that you failed to resize your pictures for the GL.
Your second problem is that they all take too long to load.
Your third problem is that Windows XP really doesn't like running DOS programs.

I agree with:

It's really a large annoyance. Windows was at first known for being very backwords compatable. As the years have piled up and the code become more jumbled, the path of backwords compatability has since diverged greatly.

I had no trouble running the ones I got from Antrax on my XP system. There is a switch you need to type though. /a or -a IIRC Whatever, check the switches and try them.

DOS, Disk Operating System. Generically it includes all the programs that early manufacturers shipped with their systems so that the user could operate them. The syntax and utilities varied from system to system. Most people probably mean MS-Dos when they say it though.

"DOS based" games may not run well on XP because unlike all earlier versions of windows, XP is not placed on top of DOS. There is no DOS program on an XP machine. The command line is a DOS simulator.

The main problems stem from the way the files are allocated and the way memory is managed.

But I digress...
