To be honest, I just did the programming/data collection stuff mostly. I did know what all of it was for, though.

Lepton, in chemistry, yes. In other fields, (I believe biology, f'rinstance), the authors are listed alphabetically with some kind of identifying mark (Usually a *) after the lead researcher.

That's how it's done in many engineering disciplines, including mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. I was under the impression that was the most widespread practice. *shrugs*

Actually, I don't know about the "supervisor's last name" bit, but I usually see the authors listed in order of how much work they did for the project.
