Recently, I 'discovered' Placebo thanks to Lumi and I liked it. That made me wonder what else is out there, whereas I don't have a fricking clue about it/them.
Looking at our CD collection, I know and like the following acts of the past say 10-12 years (some of them are older, I know - I'm looking at CD releases):
Alanis Morrissette
Belle and Sebastian
[added]Beth Orton
[added]Björk
Blur *
Bryan Ferry
Coldplay
Counting Crows *
Cranberries
David Sylvian
Evanescence
Garbage
Kayak
[added]Natalie Merchant
Nirvana
Oasis
Peter Gabriel
Placebo
Radiohead
REM
RHCP *
Santana
Sarah McLachlan
Smashing Pumpkins *
Suede
Tori Amos
Train *
Travis
U2
Verve *
*) I consider these bands overall less interesting than the others.
Disclaimer - I'm sure I have forgotten to list a couple of acts that we already know and have on CD...
Based on this list, any suggestions what to explore next?

if the only rhcp cds you've heard are pre-by the way, then yeah you'll find them less interesting, check that album out, it's pretty good.
i'll come back later with some good bands. (have to go mow the lawn. meh.)

Flips through drawer at work, finds long forgotten lunches.
I see you already have Evanescence, I thought they were fairly new. I loike them a lot though
in the same style : Within Temptation (For all others out there, it's a Dutch band)
Seether
The Atari's
Trapt
All of them 'new rock' bands...
And for something completely different, Manu Chau + Sergeant Garcia

*flits idly through CD case*
(my apologies if some of these have already been listed)
Err, yeah. These are in my taste so I don't expect you to like all of them. A lot of these bands don't put out great CDs but have certain good songs. I get my CDs discounted anyway so it doesn't matter if it's not that great. Yeah.
Ani Difranco (GODDESS.)
Elastica
Rage Against the Machine
The White Stripes
Fiona Apple
NIN (nine inch nails)
(hmm, not so sure you'd enjoy them, but I do. I can recommend some good songs for you, 'cause a lot of them are just...there, and not that great)
Operation Ivy
Prodigy
Anti-Flag
Stabbing Westward
Queens of the Stone Age
The Distillers
Aimee Allen
Sublime
AFI (a fire inside)
Malice Mizer
Air
Foo Fighters
Bif Naked (good exercise music. Heh.)
WEEZER! Yeeeey, weezer. ^^
Fatboy Slim
Alkaline Trio
Cake
Stone Temple Pilots
Rusted Root
Tricky
(the bands after this produce basically loud, angry punk music. yup. There were some up there too but these are specifically off the punkcore records sampler. whee.)
Devotchkas
The Virus
Lower Class Brats
The Unseen
A Global Threat
The Casualties.
(yep.)
The Dead Kennedys
Tiger Army
The Transplants
Tool
Smashing Pumpkins
Pretty Girls Make Graves
The Early November
Beck
I can dig around in my room and find my other CD case for more, or I can give you advice on good songs for the ones you're interested in, or all of them if you'd like. Yup. ^^
So those are the "commercial" bands I can think of, I listen to a lot of local or underground stuff which I don't think you'd be able to find. Yup.

| Great. For starters, I'll look what the library at work has (they have a fair collection of more mainstream, but including fiona Apple, Ann DiFranco, Prodigy, Beck and Wheezer - to name a few I recognised). I'll come back to you all for more specific advice. |

shrug, I always refer to bands as "them." If I were just speaking about Trent it would be "him."
Didn't there used to be more people in NIN though? A lot more? So it would really depend on from what time the songs are that you're talking about.
Eeek, forgot Beck. *adds hastily*

A few more you might like are:
AC Acoustics (Try to get 'O', I reckon it's their best album)
Aqualung
Beth Orton
Biffy Clyro (A bit heavy and kinda hard to get into but well worth the effort)
Dashboard Confessional
Death in Vegas
Disturbed
Dominic Miller
Eels
Elbow
Gomez (Duh! )
Grand Drive
Lamb
Moby
Muse
PJ Harvey
Pinback
Super Furry Animals
Tenacious D. (If ever you want a break from the heavy stuff )
The Cinematic Orchestra
Weezer
Witness
Okay, I guess it was more than a few but If I had to pick just one of the above I'd probably go with Aqualung. |

My time sense is not always so good, so some of these may be more like late 80's bands:
Portishead
Gomez
Catherine Wheel
K's Choice
Boards of Canada
Veruca Salt
Massive Attack
Also, if you like Radiohead you may like Travis and/or The Unspeakable Truth.
And here's a completely gratuitous re-rendorsement of the Flaming Lips - everything from Soft Bulletin on is fabulous, and everything before that is also fabulous, just a bit less mainstream-listenable. |

This is rapidly turning into a 'name the bands you like' thread I hope poor DP doesn't drown in all the choices.
But Massive Attack is definitely good.
Along those lines: St. Germain - Tourist |

Ataraxy, remind me to inflict Alceu Valença on you one day.
DP, I'm afraid I can't really help you very much, though if you don't mind not understanding the lyrics (and can hunt down any of their music), you might like some things by CMX. Poke me for specific song/album recommendations. |

I second the "Our Lady Peace" selection. Great Band.
I'm actually kinda surprised that Lumi didn't mention "Orgy"...
hmm... I wasn't aware that Tool represented angry punk music either...
In addition, i would like to add "Cowboy Mouth" (Sessie approved) and "Stabbing Westward" (which i think has been mentioned).
"Mushroomhead" is actually pretty good, even though i don't usually go for stuff that heavy.
And I have yet to find another GLer who has heard of "Athenaeum". Their songs all tend to sound similar, but they're pretty good, imo.

and =O at the lack of "Pearl Jam" on your list. And you might try "Hootie and the Blowfish" as well. And "Bush". All three are great early 90's bands, of the same "Alternative rock" era as the Smashing Pumpkins.

I'll only list my most favorite bands, here goes:
Better Than Ezra (my all time favorite band, from New Orleans, kind of remind me of, but obviously cannot come close to, The Beatles, for song content and range)
Alkaline Trio (amazing punk band, lyrics in their songs knock you on your ass, from right here in the Chicago area, a more well-known song of theirs, "F*** You Aurora," is about the city right next to mine, Aurora)
Live (alterna-pop, kind of Christian rock, which isn't usually my thing, they have some catchy, deep songs)
Nickelback (mainstream hard rock, "How You Remind Me" is overplayed, but also one of my favorite songs)
O.A.R. (great band, rock music, hard to describe, good outdoor, chilling out music)
Everclear (great alternative band, great live show) |

I second the nominations of
Everclear
Foo Fighters
Silverchair
Stone Temple Pilots
The White Stripes
Weezer
as music that you might enjoy.
While Live might not be a 90's band (they've been around for a while), their music is exceptionally good. |
