No, no no, wordcross, the (yep) marked the end of the angry punk music from that CD. Failure in the hole!

Better Than Ezra is a definite to check out. I'd also say take a look at The Pixies. It might not be your dish, but Jimmy Eats World has some interesting stuff. Judging by your list you might not care for it much, but you might try anyway if you run out of things on the lists above. If you're looking for something lighter, heavily Beatles influenced, check out Elliot Smith. Another along that vein is Travis. Just shots in the dark here, but maybe Supreme Beings of Leisure or The Dandy Warhols.

I second Rusted Root and Everclear. I'd also like to recommend Dar Williams if she hasn't already been mentioned. And you're all probably going to despise me for this, but I'm very fond of the Barenaked Ladies. *runs away*

Thanks for the overwhelming response.

Björk and Beth Orton. Heh. Forgot to include them in my list - we actually have all their albums.

I have tried Tool, Pixies, Moby, Fiona Apple and Ani DiFranco before, and was not that impressed.

Sure. Somehow, I think getting hold of them in France might be an issue, but I'll give it a try (otherwise, Houston in September could be an option).

Polyphonic Spree are fantastic.

And wordcross, el camino, and the cruciverbalist... er... I know you are allowed to have your own opinions and all, but... damn.

And lumi, I thought we had this discussion before, your taste in music is so varied that it has lost all meaning. Its like a 50-50 awesome/crap ratio.

While most of the music i listen to is good old metal, i do occassionally listen to more "mainstream" stuff (which i'll list.. i wont subject you to my senseless metal obsession). Behold, the suggestions of an eightteen year old (no order, just as they come to mind):

The Presidents of the United States of America
System of a Down
Queens of the Stone Age
Offspring
P.O.D.
The White Stripes
Sublime
early KoRn
Marcy Playground
Smashing Pumpkins
Propagandhi
Cake
Gorillaz
The Foo Fighters
Stone Temple Pilots

..well, bummer. i thought i'd actually have a bigger list than that.

I picked up a Creed CD in Shanghai a few years ago (at 1 USD each, these copies give you a good opportunity to investigate new bands). I played it once.

First feedback.

PJ HArvey - Stories from the city, stories from the sea

I like it. Definitely will look into the earlier albums as well. Great advice.

Weezer - Maladroit

Not bad, but not a keeper. Sorry.

Eels - Souljacker
Foo fighters - One by one
White Striped - Elephant

Not my cup of tea.

If these CDs are not representative of their output, please suggest others. Thanks.

*seconds Aga's early Royksopp nomination*

Uhm... let's see now...

Something Corporate (I know Hy likes emo, so I'm suggesting this one for him)
Deee-Lite (Ok, so Groove Is In The Heart is the only song I like, but it rules)
Millencolin
Tuuli
Oasis (Has nobody said this before? Blimey...)
Offspring
The Laziest Men On Mars (Not technically a band, but AYB is legendary)

I'm actually a big fan of 80s music *hides from DP's jokey yet angry wrath at my taste in music* and I also listen to J-Pop and anime theme tunes.

Same is true of the Eels except for their 3rd album Daisies of the Galaxy which is much broader in vision and very different in tone and style so you might like even if you didn't like Souljacker. Then again, you might not so it might be an idea to check it out on kazaalite first.

DP, try Weezer's earlier stuff. No one really likes Maladroit that much. I've read a lot of reviews that said it wasn't that great. You'll want to try The Blue Album, their first album, which is the best in IMHO.

The green album is goodness too.

And hey. I liked maladroit (maybe not as much as the other albums, but still), so speak for yourself.

*agrees with EEEM on The Pixies, even though they aren't 'nineties to now'*

Try Frank Black 'Teenager Of The Year' then if it has to be nineties. There are 22 songs, so a few were bound to be of a lower quality, but it is still full of the turbulent, eclectic, weird and deranged Francis/Thompson tunes we all know and love.

Further feedback.

Beck - Mutations

A definitive yes. More Beck to be exploited later. Again, thanks for this advice!

Sonic Youth - A thousand leaves

Not fully convinced yet, but sufficiently interested to give this album and others I can find of the group another try.

Cake - Prolonging the magic
Vines - Highly evolved

Nope. Not bad, but doesn't do a thing to me.

Fatboy Slim - Halfway between the gutter and the stars

Good grief.

You'd be better off trying The Eels' "Daisies of the Galaxy" than Souljacker. I love the Eels, and I didn't like Souljacker at all. Some of my other recommendations:

Dandy Warhols - 13 Tales From Urban Bohemia (I particularly recommend the track "Sleep")
The Whitlams - Undeniably, and Eternal Nightcap. (And all the others, but these are my two favourite albums of theirs.)
Powderfinger - Internationalist

There are more, but I can't think of them right now.

It's getting more and more diificult to find the recommendations in our library, but two more:

Eels - Electro-shock blues
Much more interesting than the first one I listened to of this group. Still, not as good as:

Dandy Warhols - 13 tales from urban bohemai
Good. Like it. Thanks for the recommendation

John Williams has written some great stuff. Eighteen Grammy awards can't be wrong, and 7 of them were for his work in the 80's (8 in the 70's, 2 in the 90's and 1 in 2000). If you've never listened to his music, well, you must have died in about 1960.

Ummm... yes... We actually have some of his works as well, butI tend to rank those under classical music.

Elliot Smith good but not a keeper.
Fiona Apple/Ani Di Franco I gave them a second try, but, mmm, no.

RHCP - latestCD: good. Better than the previous ones.

Just doing my bit, old chap.
