Momma always said, "Forrest, if you have to ask if something matters, you've already decided it really does matter."

Now for some reason I fit in the army like one of them round pegs. It's not really hard. You just make your bed real neat and remember to stand up straight and always answer every question with "Yes, drill sergeant."

Will, read your title. Ask yourself if that matters.

As for age, I'm also going to have to go with 'maybe.'

My girlfriend is 8 months older than I am — you'd have to be, well, you to say our relationship would never work out.

Then again, ask yourself how many stable, non-messed-up, working relationships you see between 18 year-olds and 50 year-olds. Porn does not count. Neither does fantasy.

In conclusion, no one here is going to give you the right answer. Ask yourself. Think about it. Look at personality differences and, especially, maturity differences. I could see you with a younger, clueless girl.

I think.

AM.

Well, age gaps aren't important if you truly love and care about the other person, or you're conducting a relationship over the Internet. But the size of the age gap might be more important than whether there is one or not. For example, some of the guys on the GL that think I'm hot are only a year or so older than me, and some of them are 10+ years older than me. That's a huge difference, not just in age, but also in how we treat each other respectively (If you're old enough to be my father, then you're more likely to treat me as a daughter rather than as a partner).

Mind you, I think the question Will should be asking is about brain cell gaps. ^_^

I think age gaps matter less as both partners are older... Say, a 14 year old and a 24 year old seems a little screwy, but a ten year age gap in general isn't too much. I really think it depends on the stage of life the pair is in and the maturity level of both.

Maybe it's a high ratio of ages that make the difference seem bad. 100 to 85 doesn't seem as bad as 35 to 20 which certainly doesn't seem as bad as 25 to 10.

There's a formula I saw somewhere which reflects that. It's rather old-fashioned, as it assumes that the man should be older than the woman. The ages at the moment they decide to go on together should ideally adhere to:

AGE (F) = 0.5 * AGE (M) + 6

So 15/18, 16/20, 17/22 and so on.

Recently, they did a study involving marrage counciling. Turns out that a younger man and older woman have the least amount of trouble. The divorce ratio is almost nill.

Ideal is a man about 26 and a woman about 14 years older.

This reminds me of an Abbot and Costello routine that went something like this:
(I think it sprung from Abbot trying to test Costello's maths skills...)

A: Now, Costello, let's say that you're 40 and you're in love with a little girl who's 10 years old.
C: I'm in love with a girl who's 10 years old?! Boy, this one's gonna be a pip!
A: Never mind. Now listen. You're 40, the little girl is 10. You can't marry her can you? You're 4 times as old as she is. So you wait 5 years. Now you're 45, the little girl's 15. Now you're only 3 times as old as she is.
C: Oh, she's catchin' up!
A: But you still can't marry her, can you?
C: No.
A: So you wait 15 more years. Now you're 60 and the little girl is 30. Now you're only twice as old as the little girl.
C: OK.
A: So the question is: how many more years do you have to wait until you and the little girl are the same age?
[pause]
C: What kind of question is that?! Pretty soon she'll pass me up. She'll wind up older than I am! Then she'll have to wait for me!
A: Why should she have to wait for you?
C: [indignantly] I was nice enough to wait for her!

DP, not sure if you heard that formula from somewhere, but on Howard Stern he always mentions it except he uses +7 if I recall correctly.

Quote:
AGE (F) = 0.5 * AGE (M) + 6

Let's see:

21 = 0.5 * 30 + 6

Hmm...works perfect for me ButterflyBabe is 21 and I'm 30. We have an 8.5 year age difference and we couldn't be happier. But I'm a little immature for my age

In many cases it's very simple because both kids have the same parents.
