Ick - are - ee - en
Day - doll - ee -en
Are - ee - odd - nee - en
all of the "en"s are actually schwas - that funky sound halfway between "en" and "un."

eek-AR-ee-an (eek-AR-io)
dead-AL-ee-an (the-THA-li-o)
a-ree-AD-nee-an (a-ree-ATH-nee-o)
MEM-ber (May-los)
Well, actually the words have been altered when they were adapted in English as the language lacks important sounds of the Greek language. (E.g. Delta which in Greek has the sound of th in "the")

isn't it from "Icarus" and "Daedelus" (spelled wrong i'm sure) as in Daedelus made wings of wax for Icarus to fly with and he went to close to the sun and they melted? if so woudln't it be:
"Ick-carian" (Ick-a-rus)
"Day-dalian" (Day-de-lus)

SilverSunset:
Correct, Icarus (Ikaros) and Daedalus (Daidalos).
Their story can be found here.
The site is from the island of Ikaria, which has taken its name from Icarus, just like the sea around the island (Icarian Sea)

In re reply 15: These words (or their roots, anyhows) are older, IIRC, than the sounds you mentioned and were yoinked by Latin before said sounds developed in Greek. So nyer, or something.
For the record, I agree with Kd's pronunciation of "Daedalian". |

actually, his wings were made of wax and feathers as is known. the wax he used would probably have been bee wax. in my understanding, bee wax is nice and moldable but it's not much of superglue. as he got higher, the wind currents got stronger and ripped his feathers offa the wax wings.
what i want to know is how getting too low would make your wings wet? wouldn't you have to actually dip them in the ocean? by which time getting the feathers a little moist is your last problem...
anyway, i always thought it'd be Eye-carion... dont know why really... |

I too, ctrlaltdel, said it 'eye-CARE-ee-on', as if I were telling you about my bringing baggage onto a plane. But since I would guess that the letter I would be pronounced like an "ee", would "EE-care-ee-on" be more accurate?
As for Daedelian, my guess would be"day-del-EE-an", with the second syllable a schwa. But I have also said "DAY-del-ee-an". So where is the emphasis?
Ariadnian: "ar-ee-AD-nee-an" for me. Is this the wrong emphasis?
