Since, of course, you don't want to be sending the homework back to bgg, I'll volunteer to grade Pablo's work. If there's anything I'm not sure of (doubtful), I'll send it to Zahariel, who graduated CMU a little more recently than Pablo, and with a Math minor to go with his Computer Science major.

That sounds like a fair process. I'm good with that and I hereby promise that I will not seek any help with the problem, either from other people or non-human resources. If I can't solve it, I will humbly admit so and will send my diploma back to C-MU.

Oh wait, I have no clue where my diploma is. I haven't seen it in many years.

So, disregard that last part. Razz

OK, bgg.....BRING IT!

And by the way, Mr. 1/5 my age, I cranked out 980 calories in 60 minutes today on the Precor upright stationary bike in case you'd like to make this a duathlon.

If so, I'm sure Zag will come and observe your workout. Felicitous

A few years ago I was confronted with a problem....a cylindrical hole through a cylinder is 6" in height. What is the volume of the remaining part of the sphere?

This would have been approximately 2000, some 32 years after I got my degree. I was able to set up definite integral and solve...getting the correct answer. I still have the piece of paper I did it on. Of course, I since learned a much simpler way of solving that very problem, one that only requires the ability to find the volume of a sphere.

Also, I can still derive the quadratic formula by the completion of squares method....which I learned in high school. I discovered that memory when helping my wife through a math course she was taking not long ago.

Don't ask about my short term memory.

Oh, I see. That's one of you homework problems, isn't it?

I'm not falling for that....but if you are taking pre-calc, you have all the knowledge you need to find the volume. You will need to use a little geometry and a little thinking.

re the sphere with the cylindrical hole, you have all the information you need - the cylindrical space is 6" high.......and your answer, 12 pi, is incorrect.

Hey - how did you make the pi symbol?

6 pi cubic inches is also incorrect.

Solving it using integral calculus, you also prove that the volume of remaining material is independent of the original size of the sphere. If you set up a sphere with radius r, the r drops out and does not appear in the answer, which is a multiple of pi.

Solving it via geometry.......I'm not sure it's quite as elegant. I don't think it proves that the size of the sphere doesn't matter.

The best way to make a π symbol is to copy and paste someone else's.

The only time I ever used calculus was for a Paladin tournament problem. On my way to the answer I came up with:

I don't remember what the problem was nor how I got a numeric answer out of that, but it made me look like I knew what I was doing.

Well, I took a look at #52.

g(x) = -(x+10)^2 + 5

I simplified to = -x^2 -20x -95 (I hope I got that right at least)

Clearly this relates to f(x) = x^2 in answer to the first question.

I sketched the graph. It goes from NW to SE in a shallow s curve, crossing both axes at negative values, and appears that it might approach vertical asymptotes left and right.

I'm not completely sure of what they're asking re the transformations, but maybe it's something like

g(x) = -f(x) -20 [f(x)]^1/2 -95. (expressing g(x) in terms of f(x).

I won't have time to do much more, as it's getting into evening and we are getting ready for a 75 mile bike ride tomorrow. HARVEST CENTURY

I'm sure I'll take another look Sunday, but that's a busy day too, and then I travel all day Monday from Washington back to Fargo. I'll have time later in the week to do more, but I'm disappointed that this wasn't the "snap" I expected it to be...especially the transformations of those functions.

Bzzzzzzt!

The point is to notice how certain patterns make graphing much easier.

g(x) = -(x+10)^2 + 5
Create a new variable x' = x-10
g(x) = -x'^2 + 5 which we already know how to graph very easily, I hope. (That is, if we imagine for a minute that g(x) says g(x')
Then you just have to move the origin of the graph so that the line where x' = 0 is actually the line x = -10. That is, shift the origin 10 spots to the right.

This technique seems really trivial when you're making parabolas, but when you're graphing

2x^2 + 12x + y^2 -4y = -22
which is a giant pain.

However, by "completing the square" twice (and observing how I planned this so that we're left with integers all around) you transform to

2x^2 + 12x + 18 + y^2 -4y +4 = 0

2(x+3)^2 + (y-2)^2 = 0

Now imagine an x' = x-3 and y' = y+2, we have

2x'^2 + y'^2 = 0

Which is a simple ellipse that is easy to graph.

Now just move the origin right 3 and down 2 to graph the original equation.
