stumper(but more of a guess): Are you the German opera singer who's announced his retirement from public performance at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich on December 31, 1992?

Yes, I am Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau

Well done! DFD is probably the best baritone of the last century, and particularly noted for his interpretation of Lieder (Schubert, Schumann, Mahler, R. Strauss and many others) and Chansons (Debussy and others). He also played most baritone opera roles.
