This idea has been going in my head for a while now (read: every time DP and Coyote ground me into fine powder), and radwulf seemed to like it, as well, so I hereby would like to declare the sign-up for the first GL blitz chess championship, officially open.
There will be two games between contestants, played on one of the various online communities that support the 5 0 time control. A list of the ones I know of will be posted at the end of this post. Since the games will be much shorter, I'm considering maybe doing it round-robin style, instead of the single elimination we've been going with so far. That also eliminates the need for seeding, which always seems to draw disagreement. The idea is only half baked, so any input is welcome.

Players:

  • Antrax
  • Coyote
  • CrystyB
  • dethwing
  • Eykir
  • groza
  • Lepton
  • mith
  • Nate
  • Puzzleprodigy
  • querciton

FICS
Yahoo Games: Chess
Karsparov Chess
Chess.net
Contributions to this section are welcome, as well.

Maybe we could do these at some set times, so people can watch? I don't want to participate, 'cause I suck at blitz, but I'd love to watch.

I was thinking each pair of players would post their moves at the end. And I don't think people should be discouraged because they think they don't play well enough -- there's a reason I dreamed this up. I expect the playing level in this tournament to be actually quite lower than in the slow ones, and thus more players have a shot at winning. I think slow chess requires more skill than fast one.

Oddity. I was pretty sure this would actually draw MORE people than the regular chess tournaments, because I don't think many people can beat the likes of DP, Coyote and bors, and blitz has the wonderful feature of everybody blundering, making the tournament a lot more exciting, and the outcome less forseen. Was I mistaken?

the problem I have is that i only really have Internet access at work and even though I can make chess moves at my leisure I don't think I would be able to get away with a full on game... that is without getting fired

Lucky you! FICS offers several interfaces which only require telnet, which every computer has. I recommend Chess Client.

BUMPing this beacuse I seriously hoped for a larger turnout. I don't understand why this tournament can't draw everybody who participated in the last two tournaments. Or is the thread's title just not appealing?

Okay, okay! Include me in on this. My biggest problem here will be that my ham-handed mouse operation means that I'll lose at least 50% of the games by overstepping the time limit. (The other 50% will be lost because I make a stupid move, but that's not relevant to the discussion).

Currently the only on-line chess option I have is on Yahoo, but I would really prefer trying a different route, as I very much dislike the playing atmosphere at Yahoo. Do you have a personal recommendation to give to one of the other 3 sites? At the moment, FICS looks nicest to me.

I am not playing, because this requires a planned time to do it. At work I don't have that luxury (besides what Sooth said), at home I don't want to be forced to use the computer at a certain time. Even apart from the fact that the internet connection here sucks big times the past few days.

Still, those playing, have fun!

Coyote, I strongly recommend FICS, if only for their inclusion of Time Seal, which means that unlike yahoo, you are not penalized with time for lagging. CrystyB, sure, I expect the playing level to be lower, the tournament is actually intended for those of us who continously lose to the top 4 of the GL.

Okay, since I doubt any more people would sign up, here's a poll: Should we try and hold this "championship" with 7 players? It means everyone play 6 games, one against each other person.

k, i choose #2, but why couldn't i do it in the GL?

That was a poor choice. I see no reason why the voting could not take place here, b/c if one's going to reply all anyway (three people did!) one can safely post that here...

Dethwing: How are you coming on fixing those bugs?
JD: I fixed them all.
Dethwing: You mean you think you fixed them, or you tested them and they are fixed?
JD: The first, except i'm really sure
RSA: Translation: I did something which should have fixed the problem but I will find out later that it I created 10 new ones.

Go to the site now, you'll get the hang of it most likely. It's pretty intuitive. Find me on AIM if you need help.
