I'd also like to add that this getaway gets stranger and stranger as we go. I'm expecting the next island to have a quarter of its questions in Pig Latin and another quarter in Navajo. Maybe another quarter in pie tins, and we have to eat our way to the answers. To say nothing of the possibility of having to climb obstacles.

Awww, I've always wanted to have a maneuver named after me.

As far as the next island is concerned, I'm rooting for Bowling for Dollars. Or maybe racing through supermarket aisles. I would *so* kick butt at that.

This will probably come back to bite me in the butt later on (there's gotta be something wacky happening with the names at the ticket machines). But here goes nothing:

Random scary thought:

I'm guessing that as the queues form in front of the ticket machines, people will be given tickets in order. I'm trying to figure out what the significance of the names on the Ticket Machines are. A few possibilities:

1) When the person whom the ticket machine is named after purchases a ticket from the machine, it will no longer dispense tickets.

2) All money collected by that machine goes to that player's tour group.

3) All money collected by that machine goes to that player. (this one is shaky. I figured the machines were only named for players who were at an attraction where a correct answer was given in the last round, but that doesn't hold for Qaqaq.)

4) There are a limited amount of tickets at each machine. If a machine runs out of tickets while there are people still in line, they will have wasted an movement round and must then proceed in the next round to a machine that is still dispensing tickets.

5) New tour groups are forming for the next island. The four machines correspond to the four different tribes. Purchasing a ticket moves you to the new tribe.

6) You might have to answer a trivia question to get the machine to work. Questions will be related somehow to the name on the machine.

Yikes!

Ticket Machine 4 (PuzzleProdigy) for me, please.

And something just occurred to me: I don't know how these ticket machines work, but I suppose it's conceivable that the person whose name is on the machine can buy more than one ticket at the machine... perhaps they could buy tickets for all of us at once?

The hope--and oh how one hopes--is that there will be instructions on the machines. The hope against hope is that it will be straightforward.

Nevertheless, I'm reading up on everything I can about Qaqaq, in case there's a trivia question about him at one of the machines. According to Google, he's a Nunavut artist. Or else just a supreme parasite.

Hmm. Both teams, as I feared, have enough coins to make the ferries now, so we're down to a race. But before I boldface anything....
Dear constable: An earlier post suggested that the boats were waiting in the port, and that the fee was 5 coins per person; are the maps suggesting that each person has an individual ticket machine that they must reach in order to get on board? Or does this work the same as the previous island, where we go to the port in order to purchase the ticket and then board directly?

Or are we not supposed to know that?

A museum docent oozes up to Qaqaq to deliver a cheerful answer. "Oh my, I suppose it's a good thing you brought that up," the docent begins. "A visitor who went to the harbor now would find that the ticket vendor is sick today and that tickets must be purchased from the machines within the museum. There are enough machines in the museum to handle all of the visitors, though some may be difficult (read: impossible) to find when map directions are covered with gray film."

"The machines that are available are equipped to handle multiple visitors, so everyone should eventually be able to receive a ticket. It may just take a little longer."

"Of course, all of this information would have come to the fore soon enough had you not asked. How diligent you are to assert your curiosity and not allow any of the designs of this particular travel package to be construed as, dare I say, sneaky surprises on the part of the Custodia Islands Getaway organizers."

Thank heavens the Qaqaq Maneuver failed.

As for me: tempting as it is to rush over to Qaqaq's machine to see what happens, I think I'll go to Machine 1 (mikeamok).

Round 10: Action

The following visitors have been randomly assigned to locations.

Dragon Phoenix (Swepia Harbor)
mole (Swepia Harbor)
Tablesaw (Swepia Harbor)
Termital (Swepia Harbor)

Visitor Sofis lags behind at the Friend of Foe exhibit and doesn’t notice the exhibit officials leaving for a meal break and locking him in. After a bit of poking around, Sofis finds an emergency exit. Sofis burst through the exit door, slides down an emergency cute and lands in a comfortable seat in the stern section of a paddleboat. The clown chauffeur at the pedals explains to Sofis that the paddleboat is heading back to Fedda Dusta. The Custodia Islands Getaway for Sofis is over and he will be sent home on a plane. "It’ll take a while to paddle back to the main island," the chauffeur explains, "but don’t worry. This paddleboat is equipped with video entertainment to keep you occupied during the trip. A video screen is placed in front of Sofis’ seat and as the feature begins, Sofis notes the title card: "Bob Barker’s How To Spay Or Neuter Your Pet: A 'Watch And Learn' Demonstration Film." The paddleboat churns slowly away from Swepia.

At Swepia Harbor, visitors Dragon Phoenix, mole, Tablesaw and Termital do not see anyone selling ferry tickets. The ensigns of the two ferries, standing by their respective gangplanks, call over and offer this information. "Ferry tickets can be purchased at machines within the museum. Once you’re at the harbor and have collected your ticket you can board your ferry.

Visitors mikeamok and Tahnan squeeze around Ticket Machine 1. They activate the screen and this message appears.

OK, before we do anything rash: I don't believe for a moment that John Ratite, sadist that he is, would want to miss a chance to prolong the pain of his guests. Therefore it's very unlikely that this island was a way to winnow the field from 18 to 4; and therefore, it is possible for the rest of us to get tickets.

So here's my guess. After these four take their tickets, the names will reset for persons 5, 6, 7, and 8; and so on. In other words, the Qaqaq Maneuver actually didn't accomplish anything except to limit the number of ticket machines and, therefore, slow things down. (In fact, if I'm right, then even the correctly-done Qaqaq Maneuver would have opened up exactly one ticket machine, and this would take four times as long as it will now.)

The question, then, is this: since jadesmar never entered a guess, does jadesmar: (a) count as having guessed "0", making him (her?) fifth from farthest and therefore fifth from last; (b) count as having made the farthest guess and therefore last; (c) not get a ticket at all?

Again, on the assumption that my above guess is right...then if it's (b), the last round of ticketbuying will be jadesmar (Ocagru) and DragonPhoenix (Lano-Catru). If it's (a) or (c), the last round will be either DP by himself or DP and jesternl (also Lano-Catru). But it does seem there's not much to do until we get to that last round.

At least I'm next.

Yes, had I known about the ticket machines, I would never have suggested the Qaqaq Maneuver. I also wouldn't have deliberately sabotaged my own question, not that I would likely have gotten it right anyway.

I suspect you're right about the machines resetting for persons 5, 6, etc. after the first 4 are done. So one thing that can be done to speed things up a little is for person 5 to be at person 1's machine, person 6 to be at person 2's machine, etc., to save a round of movement if that is in fact the way things will work.

A museum curator approaches Tahnan, but can't decide if his questions are being directed toward the museum staff of just hypothetical ranting. She backs away very slowly so as not to provoke Tahnan. The curator then finds Saxifrage.

Is there actually anything the rest of us can do at the moment, or are we just standing around watching the ticket machines?

"Good question," the curator says. "When there is a group at a ticket machine and one person presses ENTER there isn't much for the others to do. It is similar to the case of having a group at a trivia question location and one person answers the question early."

"Visitors who are waiting for a ticket machine to become available, or who have already received a ticket and are waiting for the rest of their tour group comrades to do the same, have the option of continuing to explore the musuem. It is true that there are currently no open exhibits where coins can be won, but there may be other exhibits that would interest visitors during their wait for the ferries."

Round 11: Movement

Apologies to mole. Consider yourself starting from either location when you make your movement selection this round.

Visitors Dragon Phoenix, mole, Tablesaw and Termital make no actions at Swepia Harbor this round.

The ENTER Button is pressed on Ticket Machine 1. Visitors mikeamok and Tahnan watch as a ferry ticket is dispensed. mikeamok collects the ticket. The touch screen goes blank as the ticket machine apparently resets. The screen flashes back on and the machine is now identified as Ticket Machine 5 (Tahnan) (Saxifrage)

The ENTER Button is pressed on Ticket Machine 2. Visitors Agamemnon, jadesmar and Qaqaq watch as a ferry ticket is dispensed. Qaqaq collects the ticket and five coins are deducted from the Ocagru account. The touch screen goes blank as the ticket machine apparently resets. The screen flashes back on and the machine is now identified as Ticket Machine 6 (mole) (Duphrates)

The ENTER Button is pressed on Ticket Machine 3. Visitors Corsato, Duphrates, Hitchhiker, mikegoo and RequiemEternam watch as a ferry ticket is dispensed. RequiemEternam collects the ticket and five coins are deducted from the Ocagru account. The touch screen goes blank as the ticket machine apparently resets. The screen flashes back on and the machine is now identified as Ticket Machine 7 (mikegoo) (Termital)

The ENTER Button is pressed on Ticket Machine 4. Visitors jesternl, PuzzleProdigy, referee and Saxifrage watch as a ferry ticket is dispensed. PuzzleProdigy collects the ticket and five coins are deducted from the Lanu-Catru account. The touch screen goes blank as the ticket machine apparently resets. Are there any locations left where questions will be asked?

A curator skips up to address jadesmar's concern. "We apologize that it will take a little while to issue tickets for all the visitors. We are doing what we can to expedite the process."

"There are open locations on this island where you will be asked questions. They won't be trivia questions and you won't win coins. The questions will be more along the lines of 'May I help you,' or, 'Would you like to purchase something'."

I move to Ticket Machine 8 and ask a passing curator whether ticket machines are able to dispense more than one ticket during a singel action round. I assume so, since it is clear that more than one person can purchase an item in the same round at the same location (assuming that sufficient quantities exist.
