Rules, Tutorial and Strategy.

I've been wanting to run a diplomacy game for a while now, but took a while deciding on the variant, etc. Now I think I'm ready. The game will use the "Crowded" variant for RP, which allows for 11 players. In addition, this will be a "Gunboat" diplomacy game, meaning you will not know who you play with. I feel it's better, seeing as after so many games here, some players carry grudges against each other. If you're interested, email me at GL_Diplomacy@yahoo.com. Priority will be given to new players, but I think we'll need just about everyone for an 11 player game. You will all be assigned aliases for posting in the thread, and I suggest you register email addresses (and possibly AIM names). Please do not reveal your real name to anyone, not even your allies, as it would defeat the purpose.
I will update regularily saying how many players signed up so far. If I fail to reach 11 players, I'll switch to a different, less demanding variant.

Would you consider allocating through wishlists?

I might, if I had any idea what you're talking about. Could you just explain the algorithm?

I'd imagine it's similar to mine; everyone submits a preference list for countries. The algorithm assigns values (I used 7 for top choice and 1 for last choice, for a standard game), and then checks all combinations for the setup that makes everyone the most happy (i.e. highest sum of values).

and if i get the same sum but with a less maximum disappointment, i consider this second setup to be better. IIRC, the source is there, instead of ".class" use ".java"

Sure. I don't see any advantage to using random selection over this.

Gunboat = anonymous players. That's why we're signing up by email.

This is a relatively newbie dip (I'm aiming for new players, and the seasoned ones are unfamiliar with this setup). Moreover, I think 1 or 2 were already ran.

I'm getting feedback from some players that they don't want to play due to the game being gunboat. If you wish to play crowded diplomacy, with the added fun of actually knowing who you play with (and thus we can watch Maximus and mith slug it out once more ), email me and say so. I might change the game to cater to the players' wants.

I thought that gunboat diplomacy was where there was no diplomacy at all. The way diplomacy is attempted is by communicating through your army/navy orders.

me too but that's a bit different...

Quote:
In gunboat Diplomacy no one knows who the other players are. All communication with the other players must be done via the adjudicator with broadcast/press messages.

Update: up to 8 players, and changing the rules: whoever wants to play with an alias, may do so. Anyone else, I'll use your "real name". Please let me know when signing up.
