This is a crossword with 8 five-letter words. Your goal, GL, is to guess them. You will have a certain number of guesses for each one, and for each wrong guess, you will be given a clue. Use logic (and intersecting letters) to solve them! The following is an explanation of the rules for the four games used here:

LINGO (5 tries):
Based on the game show on GSN.

If a letter in the guess isn't in the real word, it will be lowercase. If it's there, but in a different spot, it'll be UPPERCASE. If it's in the correct spot, it'll be UPPERCASE and underlined.

MASTERMIND (7 tries):
Based on the Pressman logic game.

You'll be told how many letters in the guess are in the word, and how many are in the correct position, but you won't be told which ones. This makes Mastermind tougher than Lingo.

JOTTO (8 tries):
Based on the pencil-and-paper logic game.

You'll be told how many letters in the guess are in the word, but you won't be told how many are in their places. This makes Jotto tougher than Mastermind. However, an important feature about Jotto is no letter may repeat in the word or in a guess. This makes the game similar to the Mastermind round of The Worst. However, an anagram of the word will not be accepted as correct.

WHEEL OF LETTERS (7 tries):
Based on an idea that I had. Not based on Wheel of Fortune.

Imagine a circle with the 26 letters of the alphabet in it. (Or look in the Examples section ) Notice that we can calculate the distance between two letters to be anything from 0 to 13. A is 7 from T, and B is 10 from L.

The distance is found between each letter in the guess and the corresponding letter in the real word. All distances that are at most 5 are given as the clue, but like Mastermind, you don't know which distances go to which letters. Sound hard? Not for the GL, it isn't!

Example guesses for the four games:
code:

Lingo:
Word: LINGO BINGO
Guess: LOVER CARDS
Clue: LOver cards

Mastermind:
Word: COINS SOLAR
Guess: MONEY LEARN
Clue: 21 30 ABCDEFG
Z H
Jotto: Y I
Word: NIGHT NIGHT X J
Guess: TODAY THING W K
Clue: 1 5 V L
U M
Wheel of Letters: Wheel ---> TSRQPON
Word: WORLD ANGRY
Guess: ROUND WRATH
Clue: 00234 244

All words must be valid in Scrabble, according to OSPD3.

Good luck!

GL DPWestley: I had my backspace key removed and a beverage dispenser pur in it's place. See? I can't go back and fix "put."
GLmathgrant: I once was banned from a M:TG tourney for bringing over 50 banned cards! They were Ace of Clubs, Ace of Diamonds, Ace of Hearts, Ace of Spades, 2 of Clubs. . .

Since nobody's started on Mastermind and Wheel of Letters, I'll be the first.

WOL Across: FJORD
WOL Down: LUNGE
Mastermind Across: SUINT
Mastermind Down: ORATE
Lingo Across: SPELT
Lingo Down: GUILD

The above words were chosen based on a calculation that, on average, we'd get more information from them than most other words. (Yes, I did have a reason for trying GUILD: the four remaining possibilities for that one are "blest", "doest", "guest", and "quest".)

Hope we get some more participants.

LW's SPELT came first, so I will use it.

WOL Across: 1. FJORD-15
WOL Down: 1. LUNGE-0122
Mastermind Across: 1. SUINT-11
Mastermind Down: 1. ORATE-22
Lingo Across: 4. SPElT
Lingo Down: 4. gUild

Only one guess is left for each Lingo. You must guess correctly or I win. I'm sure you'll get them right though

I know what Lingo Across is, but I will choose to let someone else take it.

Lingo Down: QUEST

And I'll try this:

Jotto Across: QUAIL

[side note]No one ever uses the word MELEE. I don't think it was ever used until Nintendo announced the title for their Super Smash Bros. sequel. [/sn]

[sn2]With MELEE solved so quickly, I'm wondering if I offered too many guesses for WOL. "Wheel" just have to see the fate of WOL Across to decide that [/sn2]

WOL Across: ASPEN-00000 -- CORRECT!

Question: How can I make this game harder? It's obvious I made it too easy, with you solving all the words so quickly (30 out of 54 allowed guesses!).

Then again, everyone ALWAYS solves Botticelli, and the mods don't say "20 questions is too much!" So, what should I do? Leave the game as-is, or modify it?

------------------
GL DPWestley: I had my backspace key removed and a beverage dispenser pur in it's place. See? I can't go back and fix "put."
GLmathgrant: I once was banned from a M:TG tourney for bringing over 50 banned cards! They were Ace of Clubs, Ace of Diamonds, Ace of Hearts, Ace of Spades, 2 of Clubs. . .
