The Geoquiz, an infamous GL game, is based on basic geographical knowledge. You don't need to remember your high school geography courses, nor do you need to have travelled the world.
Rules:
The player with the fewest points at the end of the scoring wins. For each question, you get one point for every person that sends in the same answer as you (if 2 others send, you get 3 points). For any incorrect answers, you get 10 points. If you get the bonus for any question, 1 point is taken from your score for that question. You are not permitted to use outside sources for this game.
The Questions:
1. Name a country whose capital city share the country's name.
2. Name a country whose capital city is also the country's most populous city.
3. Name a country whose flag features an isoceles triangle attached to one side. Bonus for the most triangles attached to a side. If this isn't clear, I'll post an image here
4. Name a country whose flag uses at least 4 colours. Bonus for most colours.
5. Name an African country that lies due south of some part of Russia. Bonus if answer is the same as #6.
6. Name an African country that lies due east of some part of South America. Bonus if answer is the same as #5.
7. Name a nation that was created in the past 10 years (since April 1993). this can be ambiguous, so I'll mark it with an open mind
8. Name a nation that bordered the USSR that does not border Russia.
9. Name one of the 1993 World Refugee Survey's 6 principal sources of refugees. (more than 700 000 refugees cumulative)
10. Name a continental (non-island) country whose 1994 population did not exceed one million.
11. Eight cities had a projected population density for 2000 in excess of 100 000 persons per square mile. Name one. Bonus for highest density, and partial points for a close answer.
12. To make up for those last couple toughies, name a country with a funny name. The 10% least funny names will be considered "incorrect", so a brief explanation of the humour in your country's chosen name might be wise.
Bonus:
Some of the GeoQuiz regulars might remember a question about the capital of South Africa on a past quiz. With that in mind, name as many capitals of the following countries as you can. Most correct capitals gets the bonus of Negative Ten Points!
-Bhutan
-Bolivia
-Ivory Coast
-South Africa
-Sudan
-Switzerland
Send whatever answers you can come up with to flawedconceptions@yahoo.ca
The Deadline is April 27th at GL midnight. The winner will be crowned GL GeoQuiz Champion for 2003.
I encourage anyone who hasn't yet to make their own geoquiz, and anyone who has to do so again. hehe |

#3 is rather unclear. Could you post that image?

For #9: Countries were used for the survey, however, bear in mind that the survey was over a long period of time up to 1993. What am I hinting at? Basically, either a country or a former country would be an acceptable answer.
#3
(Hy rocks, btw)

CB:
I'd consider that as one. I suppose I should have been more specific about that.
I'll take one side of your chosen flag and construct one triangle for each colour "layer". So the St. Andrew's Cross (a blue flag with a white x) would have one blue triangle and one white triangle.
Entries received from:
Quailman, Dethy, Vinny, Dolphin, ML, Sparticus, Qaqaq, Taflinel, DP, Mole, Courk, and T McAy
NB: If there is a question where the score awarded to a correct answer is at or above 10, the penalty for an incorrect answer will be increased accordingly. |

I thought all African countries are south of Russia and east of South America.

The Results:
There were 18 entrants. That makes for a very large table.
You can find the individual answers Here. Individual scores are listed below.
Everyone did very well, I'm happy to say. If I messed up any additions or whatnot, feel free to point it out.
Question #9 was struck from the results. As of 1993, the six principal sources of refugees were Afganistan, Palestine, Mozambique, Yugoslavia, Burundi, and Liberia. Bonus points (-7) go to Taflinel, Kevin, and Agamemnon for correct submissions (Yugoslavia).
The correct answers for #11 are Bombay, Jakarta, Lagos, Hong Kong, Dhaka, Shenyang, Ahmadabad, and Ho Chi Minh City.

You said you would score number seven with an open mind, and that you did. Not that it would have changed my ranking, but it would have made the champion's spot even more secure.
East Timor 20-May-02
Eritrea 24-May-93
> Ten Years ago:
Czech Republic 1-Jan-93
Macedonia 8-Sep-91
Uzbekistan 1-Sep-91
Ukraine 24-Aug-91
Croatia 25-Jun-91

Not given Credit:
Pakistan 14-Aug-47

Thanks for running this, Lepton! Of course, Aga's title is tainted somewhat due to that fact that you yourself did not participate.

Big-Congo has undergone some governmental transitions, including a name change, in fairly recent years. I guess I should've been more clear on the issue from the outset. |
