Advanced Starship Combat
By groza528
Players: 2-infinite, with a reasonable limit set by the moderator
First of all, I want to say that this is not at all similar to Chuck?s starship combat game, except that the object of both is to blow up the ship(s) of your opponent(s). Experience at Chuck?s version will not give you a direct advantage in mine.
Your ship (and all ships in the game) has 100 hit points. When a ship has lost all its hit points, it will be destroyed.
Each round you are allotted energy points to distribute among three categories: Weapons, shields, and evasive (W, S, E). The more energy you put toward a category, the better you will be at it (i.e. If you put more energy toward weapons your attacks will be stronger.) Putting energy toward weapons increases the magnitude of your attack. Shield energy will decrease the damage taken by an opponent?s attack. Evasion points will give you a probability of completely dodging the attack.
Energy points come in two forms, crewmen and battery power. Each player gets three crewmen at the beginning of the game. A crewman can be a pilot (=1 evasion pt), a tactical officer (=1 weapons pt), or an engineer (=1 shield pt). You can mix and match those three however you want (i.e. 2 engineers and a pilot, 3 tactical officers, one of each, etc.) This is done secretly with the moderator, as in an IM window.
Every round you get five energy points from battery power. Unlike the crewmen, these five battery points can be changed from round to round.
The game is designed such that the better you are at a category, the greater the bonus you get from it. For example, it is clearly better to have five points in a category than four, and better to have four than three, but the advantage created by having five instead of four is greater than the advantage of having four instead of three. That may be kind of confusing, but when you see the numbers I think you?ll understand.
For these three equations, consider n=(crewmen+battery) distributed to that category, and that n can never exceed five.
Evasion: The percentage probability that you will dodge the attack is defined by the following function. f(n)=5/2(n^2+n+10) Thus f{1,2,3,4,5}={30,40,55,75,100} In IM chat, use a D-40. //roll-dice1-sides40. I will explain in the weapons section below why a D-20 does not suffice.
Shields: The percentage of the opponent?s attack that will not damage you is defined by the following function. f(n)=5/2(n^2+n+2) f{1,2,3,4,5}={10,20,35,55,80} I will explain in the weapons section below why you may choose to use shields rather than evasion.
Weapons: The amount of damage (in hp) that an attack does is defined by the following function. f(n)= [n*1.5^n] Thus f{1,2,3,4,5}={6,9,13,20,30}. There is an added bonus if n=5. If n=5, the weapon yields an explosive charge instead of simply a laser. This explosion is more difficult to evade, and will cut your opponent?s chance of dodging by half. This is why you may opt for shields over evasion. This is also why you need a D-40. I recommend using a D-40 all the time, even though sometimes you would need only, for example, a D-4, because that way you can copy and paste instead of typing the command every time. If you aren?t playing on AIM, a D-40 can be simulated by using a D-20 in conjunction with a coin toss.
Everyone attacks simultaneously, by telling the moderator how to use their five battery points and who to attack (the latter can be omitted if only two players remain). After everyone has sent, the moderator announces the attacks (in chat) and does all the die-rolling there. If the attack is successful (not dodged) damage is calculated from the strength of the attack and the strength of the defender?s shields. Round to the nearest integer. Halves round to favor the defender (i.e. five weapons attacking four shields is 13.5 damage. That would be rounded to 13.)
All that really says is summed up in the following tables:
Weapons:
f[0,1,2,3,4,5]=[0,6,9,13,20,30] Damage
Evade:
f[0,1,2,3,4,5]=[0,30,40,55,75,100] % (/2 if w=5)
Shield:
f[0,1,2,3,4,5]=[0,10,20,35,55,80] %
code:
Weapon
1 2 3 4 5
Shield _ _ _ _ _
0 6 9 13 20 30
1 |5 8 12 18 27
2 |5 7 10 16 24
3 |4 6 8 13 19
4 |3 4 6 9 13
5 |1 2 3 4 6
Diplomacy (teaming up, backstabbing, etc) is allowed and encouraged. Questions? Post them here.

We were thinking about changing it to be only 6 poitns to spend (3 fixed, 3 flexible).
We felt that with 8 it was too easy to do 5 in whatever you want and not be a sacrifice.
This led to everyone doing a 5 every round in one system or another, consqeuently leading to boring 5 weapon -- 5 shield matches.
Is it ok if i change it in this manner? |

| /out. But, you might want to make it clear: Does one know the other ships' crews (i.e., their fixed energy)? |

| Not unless you can figure it out, which should be relatively easy with 3 fixed and 3 variable. |

Lepton is right.
Ok, this is officialy starting. Send crews. I'm going with 6 points total instead of 8. So keep that in mind when you send crews.
Late comers can still send. |

I didnt see it in the rules, but I didn't look that hard. I think allowing a reconfigure of your ship after you get below 50 hp was a good idea for people who really didnt know what to do. Also, with only a total of 6 units in a round, it will become a longer game more than likely. Just my thoughts for I have played the chat game
NOT playing though |

Drat, I missed the signup for my own game
And as MattV said, I was planning to add the bit that you could change your crew when you got below 50 hp. I just hadn't by the time I sent dethy the rules. Dethy can make the call on that one. |

Welcome to the game! 7 ships have sent from various governments in an attempt to gain a foothold in a crucial sector. Commanding each of these vessels are the following Captains:
Veg, MisticX, FF, Pika, Lepton, Neo, and with a last minute arrival, Groza.
Groza travelled so fast trying to arrive on time, that he pushed his ship a little to much. He shows up with a small ammount of damage allready on his hull. Groza takes 5 damage
The ships have been eyeing each other for a short ammount of time, but have recently let loose with a voley of fire. Let's see what happens.
Pika's ship is the only ship that opts to not fire immeaditly. Perhaps this angred several other commanders? Neo, FF, and Veg all attack Pika.
Pika has 3 evade, for a 55% chance.
Neo attacks with 1...and misses.
FF attacks with 2...and hits! Pika has 3 shields, so he takes 6 damage
Veg attacsk with 3...hits! Pika takes 10 damage
Following this, MisticX and Groza turn their guns on Neo.
Neo has a single evade, for 30%.
Groza attacks with 4...and hits! Neo has 4 shields. Neo takes 9 damage
Misticx attacks with 3...and hits! Neo takes 6 damage
Lastly to round the round out, lepton opens up completly on Mistic, with a 5 shot.
Misticx has no evade, but 3 shields, he takes 19 damage .
Current health:
Leptonn (100)
Pika (84)
FF (100)
Veg (100)
Misticx (81)
Neo (85)
Groza (95)

Having sized up the competition, the game continues.
First, neo decides to play it safe, not firing.
Again, the turtle is attacked. Both FF and Mistic shoot at him.
Neo has 2 evade, for a 40% evade chance.
FF attacks with 2...and misses.
Mist attacks with 3...and also misses.
However, the big target this round is lepton, as Pika, Groza, and Veg aim their cannon's his way.
Lepton has 1 evade, 30%.
Pika attacks with 3...and hits. No shields. Lepton takes 13 damage
Groza attacks with 3 as well...and misses.
Veg attacks also with 3...and hits. 13 damage
Lepton returns the favor, attack Veg with 5. (Of course you saw that coming, 1 evade and no shields )
Veg has 3 evade, against a 5 attack the odds are 55/200.
...and it's a hit! No shields, veg takes 30 damage.
Current health:
Lepton (74)
Pika (84)
FF (100)
Veg (70)
Misticx (81)
Neo (85)
Groza (95)
