Debate Competition sign up

Inspired by this thread, this is the sign up. Basically the contestants will participate in one on one debates about a variety of subjects, be rated on each debate, and in the end we might have an official best GL debater. As the thread shows, the idea is still in the works, so feel free to suggest your ideas in the OT thread. This is mostly to gauge the interest level from potential participants.

Ummm...I guess I should post here too. I'd like to start off as one of the judges, or on the jury or whatever we decide to do. Hopefully, those on the jury can choose to become a debator if a certain topic interests them...

At the moment I'm just interester in debaters, because:
a) It'll be obviously easy to find judging staff.
b) We're not settled about how to judge it, yet.
I'm thinking we'll need at least 8 debaters for it. 2 so far.

Some people get very annoyed when others don't take debate as seriously as they do...

Many people balk at making a game out of it.

I doubt extro will play either...

Alright, count me in as a debator, with the disclaimer that I would find in very hard to competently and seriously debate and defend a position that I do not agree with.

I never claimed to be a good debator. I have previous debated on the side I disagreed with, and found it very difficult, especially if the topic is one I feel strongly about. The reason I stated the idea of a debate thread is because I like the reading the real debates in OT where people were stating their actual opinions and discussing them. While I agree that debating the other side of an issue is a good exercise if you are trying to learn how to debate, I wanted to see more of how people really felt in this thread, in a debate format. If it has gone away from that, it will still be intersting, but less so IMHO.

But a small model debate in the signup thread would give viewers a taste of what the game will be like. It may increase participation, which couldn't help but make for better debates, and more enjoyment of the game as a whole.

I don't think the winner has any right to be crowned the "official best GL debater".

By "debating" only when they are trying to spread they are truth, they make it clear that they are missionaries, and not debaters.

What if we do it with debate teams? Get eight GLers together, and then randomly put them together. It's easy to debate by yourself, but when you have to work in a team with people who you don't agree with, it can get extra fun.
