k so, ref, what are the rules for placing those pieces? Not equality over the borders, not inequality either. Are they arranged in a different manner, like in:
code:
/---T---T---T---\

| * | * | * | * |
|* *|* *|* *|* *|
| * | * | * | * |
|---+---+---+---|
| * | * | * | * |
|* *|* *|* *|* *|
| * | * | * | * |
|---+---+---+---|
| * | * | * | * |
|* *|* *|* *|* *|
| * | * | * | * |
\---=---=---=---/

It doesn't look to me like there are rules for placing. Rather, it seems you can place them anywhere in the attempt to set up a specific pattern or shape. Like, say, pika going for the biggest "block" of 1's, and ref for 0's (though that doesn't look like it's precisely correct).

It's been about 6 years since I played this, and I only played it once, but IIRC, the object is either to make a row of 4 with one characteristic in common (i.e. all the third numbers would be 1, or they all start with 0), or to force the other player to do so (can't remember which, probably the first).

I don't think we should explain it. It'll be more fun that way.

(I was in GLC when they decided on this format, so I know. )

I read the rules. There are 16 pieces. There are four characteristics of the pieces with two choices each. (I believe color, shape, hole, and height.)

On the first turn, P1 picks a piece NOT AT RANDOM. On each future turn, the player who's up places the last piece chosen, and picks another one. When one player makes a line of 4 (I believe horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) that share a characteristic in common, he wins.

Nice. How are pieces chosen? Are they face-up and i choose to give you the one which i like best [or which i rationalised would do you the least good]?

Its better with the real pieces, but you pick the piece for the next person and then pick your piece. This way you could have a row of "tall" piece and not have to worry about losing because you hand them a short piece.

also, you can win by making a small square (this rule is ommitted for newbes, but it makes it (I think) impossible to stallmate.)
