I believe we had this discussion in OT a while back, but...

What interesting roles have the mods out there invented?

I'll submit one of my own...

Poisoner: Mafia 38
Each night, poisoned another player. If that player was voted for by any player other than the Poisoner, the player died. Poison would be revealed to be in the system of a dead player if the player was killed by non-poison means. Poison was a permanent condition.

I still like the Serial Killer that can "hide out" at night... if they don't kill that night, then any investigation of them turns up townie, or innocent...

I think what Jeff is trying to say is, if anyone takes the time to compile a sort of FAQ containing the rules, ethics and common roles, I'll be happy to stick it on top (though mafiascum.net already has all these things, but apparently going to another site is Lucifer's way of claiming your soul, or something).

Just an idea I conjured up for those David Eddings fans out there.

Groups:

Western Angarak Grolims: Essentially mafia. They are one of the two factions of Grolims. Each night, they get to sacrifice one person to the Dragon God Torak. Optionally, one Grolim can be the Grolim Hierarch, with the ability to investigate another to see if he/she is a sorcerer (see below for Sorcery). The Grolim Hierarch is a sorcerer.

Mallorean Grolims: Another faction of Grolims. Pretty much identical to the Western Angarak Grolims. If one side has a Hierarch, the other should also to keep it fair.

Dagashi: A band of assassins. They are immune to Grolim sacrifices, as they are on their side. However, they do not side with one faction or the other. (see Victory Conditions below)

Disciples of Aldur: The "good guys". Each Disciple is a sorcerer, and some have a special ability. Each night, they jointly choose one person to investigate. Depending on who is still alive, the investigation can reveal various things.

Assorted Townies: Rivans, Chereks, Drasnians, Arends, Algars, Sendarians, Nyissans, Tolnedrans, and Ulgos. No special roles.

Specific roles:

Belgarion, King of Riva: A Disciple of Aldur. Each night, he choose to kill one person, albeit once per game. While Belgarion is alive, the investigation will reveal the role of Silk, Barak, Mandorallen, Ce'Nedra, or Relg.

Belgarath the Sorcerer: A Disciple of Aldur. Each night, he may choose to kill one person, albeit once per game. Belgarath is immune to Grolim sacrifices, but not Dagashi assassinations. While Belgarath is alive, the investigation will reveal the role of a Grolim, but he cannot distinguish which faction.

Polgara the Sorceress: Another Disciple of Aldur. Each night, she may protect one person from any killings, not including herself. She is immune to Dagashi assassinations, but not Grolim sacrifices. While Polgara is alive, the investigation will reveal a Dagashi. If Belgarath is also alive, the investigation will also reveal which side a Grolim is on.

Durnik, "The Man With Two Lives": A strange fellow, indeed. He starts out as an ordinary "townie" with no special powers. Once he is killed in any way, he is reborn as a Disciple of Aldur. He joins the rest of the Disciples, and he cannot be killed in any way after that until Polgara is killed. Then, Durnik can be killed again. While Durnik is alive and a Disciple, the investigation will reveal the role of an ordinary "townie".

Ce'Nedra, Queen of Riva: Wife of Belgarion. Each night, she may "listen" to the conversations of one person. Any e-mails sent to or by that person at that night are heard by Ce'Nedra. However, Ce'Nedra will receive only words. She does not know who sent the e-mails nor who received them. Thus, knowing that she may be listening, anyone who speaks at night must be wary of what they say.

Mandorallen, Baron of Vo Mandor: Knight Protector of Ce'Nedra. She and Mandorallen know each other at the beginning of the game, but they may not communicate. As long as Mandorallen is alive, Ce'Nedra may never be killed. If a Dagashi assassination is attempted, Mandorallen is killed in the process of the protection. Any other kill attempt is simply negated.

Silk/Kheldar, Prince of Drasnia: A thief and a spy, as is the nature of Drasnians. Silk is his nickname, and he uses it often. Each night, he may investigate a person, and he can determine whether that person is a "baddie" (Grolim or Dagashi), but not which type. He may choose instead to kill a person, but only if he has investigated him/her first.

Barak, Earl of Trellheim: A huge Cherek warrior. He acts as an ordinary townie until Belgarion dies. Then, Barak enters a rage, and he kills one person at random every night.

Relg, the Ulgo Zealot: Relg has a unique power. He may choose another person to "push" into stone. After that the night, that person may not vote, nor may he/she be lynched. The next night, that person still can't do anything (i.e. no e-mails, no choices, etc.). Any continuous abilities, such as Mandorallen's protection of Ce'Nedra, is also nullified for that night. At that second night, Relg must decide either to release that person or keep him/her there for one more night. If the person is released, all abilities are resumed. If he/she is kept in the stone, that person is killed by morning. Also, instead of putting someone else in stone, Relg may hide in the stone. While in the stone, he can't vote, lynched, killed, or investigated.

Sorcery:

Every Grolim Hierarch and Disciple of Aldur is a sorcerer. This means that they have specific powers of sorcery. There is a risk of using sorcery, however. If any sorcerer decides to use a power, each other sorcerer has a 50% chance of "hearing" the sorcery being used. If someone hears the sorcery, that person receives a list of four people, one of which is the sorcery user and the other three are random. Note that nightly sacrifices are not sorcery.

Victory Conditions:

1) The Western Angarak Grolims win if everybody else except the Dagashi is dead. This means that, near the end of the game, the two Grolim groups could be battling it out, possibly ending in a draw with everyone dead.

2) The Mallorean Grolims win if everybody else except the Dagashi is dead. Basically, like two warring Mafia families, the Western Angarak and Mallorean Grolims seek to kill all, including the other Grolim side, but excluding the Dagashi.

3) The Dagashi win if everybody else except one Grolim faction is dead. The Dagashi don't necessarily side with one Grolim group, but they can't win unless one side is dead.

4) Everybody else (the "town") will win if all Grolims and Dagashi are dead.

Gosh, I must be bored. I just made all this up on the spot. I may have made some roles too powerful, but that would be up to the mod to decide how to modify them. Relg is a complicated role and requires some technical decisions. Just some ideas some future mod might want to use. It would be best of you have read David Eddings if you want to use this theme.

Following the Malloreon are two side novels: Belgarath the Sorcerer and Polgara the Sorceress, in that order. Then comes the Rivan Codex, where David Eddings gives his commentary on writing the series.

Also, although it's not part of the series, try reading Redemption of Althalus. Very good book.

I have a really really odd idea for a mafia... but it needs lots of hammering out and testing, etc., by someone who is knowledgable in such matters. Anyone want to volunteer? It will either change the face of online mafia, or it will bomb like a sparkler in the Hindenburg.

Scheme idea: THis one is for 'creative people' only

Example Only

Theatresports Mafia
-------------------
Welcome to Theatresports Mafia. Townies will be given a persona. You must stay in character and try to interact to each other, while some of you drop dead randomly. This mafia is designed for fun and creative posts, so please only sign up if you want to put the time into having fun.

1) The overstressed overworked cop. Investigates a player each night, but doesnt get any result, but told he will know when he found one. He comatoses when he finds one cos he cant handle having to arrest a player. Snaps a lot....

2) Overbearing doctor. Will protect a player from dying, but IF their life is saved he places a restriction on them 'for their own benefit'- but doesnt know he does this. The restriction is randomly chosen from a) Must RHYME the next day b) Must Vote No Lynch c) Must fake a role claim d) Must post in reverse (word by word) etc. Persona is overbearing dominating character.

3) Womanizer. Desperate for dates. Will try anything to get them.

4) Is convinced that he is a descendant of any or all bible characters. Speaks in thees and thous and old english.

5) Electioneer. Wants to be elected to parliament and is campaigning along the way. Must make promises etc and behave like an electioneer. May cancel ones persons vote each day by writing in the thread - but it must be in style. -Counter role to #13

6) Man with a paranoid fear of beavers.

7) Hans Christian Andersons twisted younger brother. Each day will assume a different fairy tale character and will try to emulate them in thier posts

8) You are a musical conductor and you are convinced the rest of the town is your band that wont play in tune or at all.

9) Freed Slave. Was once a slave to XX the Mafia GodFather, and knows he is evil. On XXs death will inherit the mafia. ( A RETIRED GODFATHER ). Unknown to the mafia and the GF has forgotten. Must behave slave like in the thread - eg calling people master, offering to help etc

10) Mafia Godfather with Amnesia. Cannot remember his mafia, but may investigate each night to see if anyone jogs his memory - once that happens he joins the mafia and no longer investigates.

11) Mafia Quantam Leap Killer. Steals a persons body and makes them appear to have suicided.

12) Mafia Clown. Has a hand buzzer with a 50,000 volt shock. Shakes the hand of the victim and electrofries them. Behaves and posts as though a clown capable of all showmanship eg Magic, Jokes, Stunts, Mime, etc

13) Incremental Voter. Each day their vote grows in size. Day 1 vote counts as ZERO, Day 2 counts as 1, 2, 3 until they can lynch all. EVIL - alternative to SK!

What about a Role Claim Mafia? Where everyone was forced to claim their role on Day 1. Or maybe with a twist -- like you couldn't claim your true role.

No problem! I just thought it would be funny if--

"Serial Killer Snake - you killed amb (Homer Simpson). You drag the body and hide it."

Morning breaks, and amb is missing. You spend a few fruitless minutes searching for him, but it's a large town, and you have a lynching to perform.

Of course, if you put a character like this in, you have to make him vulnerable to everyone who investigates... probably put in one or two characters specifically looking for him, as this is a tremendous ability.
