| so I was talking to referee on AIM a couple of days ago and we were discussing player numbering. The full complement is 57 players, are they all available or is that the total roster? How many players can play in a single game? How does the shirt numbering work? Can a player with the wrong shirt number (eg 77) present himself to a referee and say "I am an eligible receiver for this play"? |

OK, let's go piece by piece (as JTR said)
Chuck> Again, I didn't make the rules. Inadvertent whistles are a rare occurence anyway.
Suspence13> OK, I didn't read that report, and the only reason I could think of a pass interference not being called is with an uncatchable pass. In fact, it's the only reason, since as NFL report shows, inegelibility is not a valid reason to not throwing the flag.
Chien> There are 99 valid numbers in a jersey, from 1 to 99 inclusive. The numbers are assigned by position as follows.
code:
QB 1-19
P 1-19 //Punter. The one that kicks the ball to send it far
K 1-19 //Kicker. The one who tries to send it between the uprights or makes kickoffs
WR 10-19
RB 20-49
SF 20-49
CB 20-49
LB 50-59
C 50-79 //Center. Central man of the OLs. Usually wears a fifty
OL 60-79 //Yes, OL includes C.
DL 60-79
TE 80-89
WR 80-89 //Usually they wear an eighty, but can wear a ten
DL 90-99 //Usually they wear a sixty or seventy, but can wear a ninety.
Where this numbering has more impact, it's on eligibility. In an usual formation, the non-elegible receivers (those on the scrimmage line, but not at the extremes of it) are the OLs. They wear from 50 to 79, and no other player at offense wears those numbers. Still, a player can tell the referee that he will form as elegible for this play, and he is elegible this play. Of course, all defense players _know_ that he's elegible this play.
On the 53 men rosters issue, that's competition rules. NFL ask for 53 men on each team. At any given play, there are 11 players on the field. If you take calculations, 11 offense players + 11 defense players + substitutes to all these + kick specialists is already very close to 53. |

Everytime I vote for quercitron at night, nothing happens the next day. This is way too much of a coincidence for me. The night I voted for jeep, he was killed the next day. |

I presume you're just taking a shot in the dark IS, so I'll let you know, I'm not mafia. I'm a QB, (a.k.a. townie) for the Bills. Your vote would be wasted on me. Any cops with clues?

Now onto time-outs and end of play in each 1/4.
3 time-outs each side, each half? 2 challenges in total each side?
At end of play 1/4 and 3/4 teams change ends but the play continues from the last play of the 1/4?
At the 1/2 there's a change ends and a new kick-off? Is that from the 50?
What is the 2 minute rule in each 1/2?
btw I'd really like to thank referee publicly for these lessons. Has any-one else gained from them? |

3 time outs per half ... per team.
2 challenges per team per game.
Kick-offs are from the 30 yard line.
2 Minute rule ( 2 minutes left in first half, and 2 minutes left in game): There will be an AUTOMATIC timeout at the 2 minute mark of each half. This is called the '2 minute warning'. After the two minute warning, no team may use any of their remaining challenges. All challenges will be called by the referee on the field, or by the referee in the replay booth. The final ruling will be by the referee on the field as per usual replay challenge rules. |

yes, CF. The only wrong assumption you made is that kickoffs are made from the 50 yard line. They are made from the 30, as Qball said. (That is, unless a penalty changes that)
Well, and there _may_ be a change ends at the end of second quarter. The loser of the coin toss at the start of the game will have first choice now (usually used on getting the ball, and the winner of coin toss then will be asked to choose an end)
An addition on the last 2 minutes of each half. There are some changes in the rulings on those last 2 minutes. Aside of the no-challenges rule, all these changes affect to how the clock starts after it's stopped. (for example, in kickoffs the clock usually starts when the ball is kicked, but in the last two minutes it actually starts when the kicked ball is touched). |
