I think there are so many clues that this puzzle seems [bold/]messy[/bold]. How do you deal with puzzles like this?

Note: Even if it is messy, I can do away with it. Brrrrr.... Shocked

I get the following from west to east:

Lucy, USA, Yellow, Speed Limit, 3 kids
Sarah, France, Green, Railroad Crossing, 4 kids
Rosanna, UK, Red, Hospital, 5 kids
Hope, Canada, Blue, One-Way, 2 kids
Ellen, Autralia, White, Stop Sign, 1 Kid

A grid really helps with this one. Use the categories given as well as 5 locations.

Gee, I only needed two tables:
There are at least two people left of Red/UK/5 (US and France) and at least one to the right (ONE WAY). So Red/UK/5 is in the middle or right-middle house.

Oh, and my solution is:
Code:

Lucy   Sarah  Rosanna Hope   Ellen
Yellow Green  Red     Blue   White
US     France UK      Canada Aus
3      4      5       2      1
Speed  RR     Hosp    OneWay Stop

I found out that rosanna can be the only one with 5 children first, and from there on it can actually be considered solved...

I think this works:

Left Most Lucy - Yellow - 3 - US - Speed Limit
2nd From Left Sarah - Green - 4 - France - RR Crossing
Middle Rosanna - Red - 5 - UK - Hospital
2nd From Right Hope - Blue - 2 - Canada - One Way
Right Most Ellen - White - 1 - Australia - Stop

Once I trided positioning things on the street, it kind of fell into place

There are, as far as I can see, two valid final tables for this puzzle, neither of which contradict the given statements.

Table one is:

YELLOW BLUE RED GREEN WHITE
LUCY SARAH ROSANNA HOPE ELLEN
AMER. FRENCH BRITISH CANAD. AUST.
SPEED RAIL HOSPITAL ONE W. STOP
3 4 5 2 1

Table two is:

YELLOW GREEN RED BLUE WHITE
LUCY SARAH ROSANNA HOPE ELLEN
AMER. FRENCH BRITISH CANAD. AUST.
SPEED RAIL HOSPITAL ONE W. STOP
4 3 5 2 1

The original statements aren't worded especially well, since statement 10 suggests that the American lives one house directly to the left of the Britain, when such a configuration is impossible because the three resulting possible places for the American the French and the Britain will contradict statements 1, 3, or 4.

Incidentally, the colour layout of table two is possible under the assumption that statement 12 does not preclude Hope's house being blue itself (again, the statement needs to have been better worded). The children change from tables one and two, however, are possible without contradicting any statement, so, whilst fun, there isn't actually a single correct answer but 3 (four if the house colour change is permissable).

Clue 12 tells us that although Hope does not live there, THERE IS a house that has 2 neighbors, one of which has 4 children and the OTHER is blue. Therefore, the blue house does not have 4 children.

When I read clue 10 I never thought it implied that the American and the Brit were next door to each other.

Mad oh, i see how it is. i found this new site that says "UNSOLVED PUZZLE!", so i spent the last hour solving it, only to get here (to post it) and see ALL the ANSWERS! Confused ...I don't feel as cool now... Laughing oh well, this is what i got:

Lucy in the far west house (yellow) is from the usa , has 3 kids, & is by the speed limit sign. moving east...
sarah Green France 4 RRXing
Rosanna Red UK 5 Hospital
Hope Blue Canada 2 Oneway
Ellen White Austrailia 1 Stopsign

..thats it, i guess

GuestUser (Post 15):

Both your tables are incorrect, because Statement 12 gives us the information that there exists a woman who has 2 neighbours - one with 4 kids, one in a blue house. In Table 1, you have those two neighbours as the same house. In Table 2, they are too far apart.

Even though I'm by no means the first to solve it, I got the same answer that most people have already posted. For completeness' sake, it's:

posted a zillion times above already - can't you read??

Honestly!

Let me be the first, though - to thank mathgrant for another excellent puzzle, and also challenge the complaint above that it's 'messy' - all statements are needed, and none of them duplicate information. Extreme Delectation

This puzzle is not as hard as all of you are making it out to be. And did no one happen to notice that Ellen the Australian is Mackay? Well, I guess if you're not a regular, you wouldn't realize that. Sorry for the interruption. Carry on taking, 30+ minutes to solve this weakling puzzle.

i just found that it went USA FRANCE AND UK, in that order and as UK and canada could not be at either end (as they both have two neighbours) i new there was only one place that trio could go and work from there, knowing so much about the UK girl made it easy. 7 minutes i took. the answer has been posted so many times seems pointless to post it again. Bring on the next Puzzle......

Actually, clue #12 says that "Hope is NOT the woman whose two next-door neighbors are the woman with 4 children and the woman whose house is blue." - which implies that there is such a woman, and reduces your 4-way solution to a unique one.

In fact, there's no need for the full statement that #12 provides: it would suffice to say that "the woman with 4 children and the woman whose house is blue have exactly one house between them."

GuestUser on Thu Jul 22, 2004 2:48 pm (#15) wrote:

Actually, no: clues #10 and #4 are worded identically, so you cannot interpret one of them one way and the other in a different way!
For the rest of your argument, the same clue #12 used in bharat1983's case is the one to ponder upon.

Ferris on Wed Aug 04, 2004 5:31 am (#19) wrote:

I must confess you are not entirely wrong here... The only redundant thing is that wealth of detail in clue #12 (you can leave Hope out and just say those other two have exactly one house in between). But regardless of that, i think mathgrant got the perfect statement for it.
