Anybody know of any good American companies I could "purchase" stock in? It's for an Economics project and I want to ultimately come out on top. It'll only last for a few months, so the companies only have to do well until the end of May. Any help would be appreciated, but I need to finish picking my companies before I go to bed tonight.

In addition, any help on interpreting all the crap on stock market sites would be helpful, if you can't just rattle off three companies for me.

One of my grade school math classes did something like this. IIRC, the guy who won had a lot of stock in the WWF.

Maybe you could look at some tech companies that will be releasing new products in the intervening months. For example, if Intel sells Dell on their new Yonah chip architecture, the stock prices of Intel should make a good jump. Similarly, if AMD sells Dell on *their* chips, AMD's stock prices should jump.

I understand that oil companies are doing steadily well right now.

Watched our stocks rise and fall. Someone had their's split, I think.

We had to pick three companies, divide 500 stocks between the three companies as we saw fit, and track their progress until the end of the course. Hopefully I will make money, but that remains to be seen. Maybe I'll go dig up the names of the companies that I chose. One was Sirius Satellite Radio, on the advice of another friend.

That sounds pretty much like what we did. We had so many fake dollars to buy stock with, since some are more expensive, but yeah, it seems like the same idea.

Purina dog chow and other pet products. Or some other pet care company because I can't seem to get info on this one.

Apple Computer may also do well. More risk here though. (AAPL)

Things to stay away from / likely to be risky: products that require oil or gasoline.

NYSE doesn't have anything listed for GL. However, there is the G & L Realty Corporation.

Or you can just try random letters at someplace like http://finance.yahoo.com/ until you get a chart you like. That is what I did when we played a similar game a few years ago.

If you get shares and want dollars, buy really expensive stocks. I mean, I would rather have 100 shares of X if it were at $98/share than to have 200 shares of Y at $12/share.

Are you really sure you get shares instead of money to play with? That isn't very much like life at all!

I need help thinking of a "pen name" for when I am directing movies. My friends and I were brainstorming and we didn't come up with much. Mostly, they couldn't stop cracking jokes like "Master Bation" and "Guan Dilldoe".

Anyway, any suggestions would be great. I thought about Jack Miller and Devon Tylindson, though those aren't quite what I want.

No one uses their real name. Tom Cruise is not his real name, IIRC. Plus, my name doesn't sound that great and it is just mediocre. It needs to be something more memorable.

Tom Cruise almost uses his real name. He just dropped the Mapother, which is a bit of a mouthful. In fact, as far as I've noticed, the only reason people use alternate names is if their's is difficult to say, or someone else has the same name (Michael Keaton was born Michael Douglas).
