Bishop seeks limits for sex abuse payments
Quote:
A prominent Chicago bishop is suggesting legal changes that would shield Roman Catholic institutions from paying excessive damages in sex abuse lawsuits, which he says jeopardize the mission of the church.
Quote:
"This attack is particularly directed against bishops and priests, since the most effective way to scatter the flock is to attack the shepherd," he told worshipers in Grand Rapids. "We must also use our religious discernment to recognize that the principal force behind these attacks is none other than the devil."

Shut up Chavez
Quote:
Spain's King Juan Carlos told Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to "shut up" during closing speeches by leaders from the Latin world and brought the Ibero-American summit to an acrimonious end.

They might have gotten the idea from here.
My blood still boils about this.
Someone else wrote:
Michael Woods was such a nonentity that he could indeed have gone through his political career as ‘Michael Who?’ However, on his last day as a Fianna Fáil minister in 2002, he signed an agreement indemnifying the religious orders who abused residents in their care (mainly children) against court actions taken against them by these victims. In return, the State was to receive €128m made up of cash and property. Some €20m worth of property has so far been handed over but many of the other properties offered to the State have no commercial value. While Woods acted in the absence of the Attorney General (thanks for that, McDowell) and against the clearly expressed objections of the Dept. of Finance, he must have had the nod from the Taoiseach. The cost to the taxpayer of this magnanimous gesture is likely to be €1 billion, less whatever sum is finally extracted from the religious orders. There is no rational explanation for this lunacy.

The legal and administrative costs alone of the Residential Institutions Redress Board are expected to top €200 million and the religious institutions are not even compelled to cooperate with the investigations.

I realise that the state must accept some responsibility, since they delegated (though abdicated is more like it) their responsibility for the running of schools, leaving it to the religious orders. But at least share the blame 50:50, not 10:1!

Incidentally, for all you Dan Brown fans, Woods is allegedly a member of Opus Dei.

I better stop typing now before my blood pressure becomes a problem.

Wrigley Field to be renamed?
Quote:
Real estate tycoon Sam Zell finalized his purchase of the Tribune Company today, and he's wasted no time in making waves throughout the company's various properties. First, he stomped through the Chicago Tribune to energize the newspaper's troops against the rising tide of financial failure. Now, he's dropping knowledge on his plans for the sale of the Cubs, including one interesting caveat: Wrigley Field's naming rights will be up for grabs.

California Judge Censors The Internet
Quote:
A California district court has shut down a controversial Web site in the U.S. that allows whistle blowers to post corporate and government documents online anonymously.

A site known as Wikileaks.org has been taken offline in the U.S. due to a court order from the U.S. District Court in San Francisco. However, the site remains online in other countries, including Belgium and Germany.

Don't you think there's a difference between "resigning" and "not seeking another term of office"?
Resigning is generally a much more pejorative term, implying that the person was forced to leave office, frequently as a result of their own venality or incompetence.
Now I agree that many political figures have avoided the need to actually resign by not seeking re-election, but I doubt that is the case in this circumstance (although if there is some astonishing scandal to break about Castro that we don't know about, then I will eat my hat!)

Resign is how the Washington Post is calling it, as is virtually every other news agency.
Why the semantic defense of a dictator who's run his country into the ground for 50 years?

It took me three pages to find the word "resignation" in that piece, and the BBC piece you linked to doesn't mention it at all. It's obviously the easiest word to use, but I still don't think it's accurate.

But no, let's not get into a pointless semantic argument when a pointless political argument would be so much more fun ... Extreme Delectation

fwiw, I don't think Castro was particularly successful as leader of his country. But I don't think that e.g. George W. Bush has been either, given that it's fundamentally an impossible job that should probably never be given to anyone who actually wants to do it.

Melancholy

I wrote a long tribute regarding this and meant to post it as a seperate thread. Then the internet ate my post and refused to spit it back.

So I'll just say: "So long, Arthur, and thanks for everything you've done for me."

I just got back from the UK National SF Convention, where there was some discussion of Clarke's work, but not nearly enough given that the timing was wrong (obviously!) One pleasing aspect, however, was that one of the sessions was about determining where the 2010 Con would be held. The only bidder was running under the title of Odyssey which was actually one of the best tributes imaginable, even though the name had been settled upon some time earlier.

So how can prevent your house from getting stolen? Not easily, the FBI says. The best you can do at this point is to stay vigilant.
