I've been on a bit of a western kick lately. So far I've watched
A Fistful of Dollars
For A Few Dollars More
The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly
The Magnificent Seven
The Outlaw Josey Wales
High Plains Drifter

on my list to be watched are
Once Upon A Time In The West
Unforgiven
Stagecoach
Tombstone
Open Range
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
High Noon
The Wild Bunch
Hang 'Em High
The Long Riders

so anyway, the point of all this is to ask for recommendations on what to add to the list

I saw a small part of this movie once (like, 10 mins), but what I saw seemed good. "Maverick," with Mel Gibson. IMDB gives it 6.7/10.

"Maverick" is not a western, thats a... something else.

I assume you have seen Unforgiven already?

Also off the top of my head:

Stagecoach
Tombstone
Open Range
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
High Noon
The Wild Bunch

It's a western setting, but it hardly qualifies as a "Western" since it's a Comedy

You need to watch a film called 'The Long Riders'.
A brilliant western based on the life of Jesse James and his associated gangs. The clever part in this film is where real sets of acting brothers are used to play the outlaw gangs.
The Carradine brothers (David, Keith, Robert) play the three members of the Yonger Gang.
The Keach brothers (James, Stacy) play the two James brothers.
The Quaid brothers (Dennis, Randy) play the two Miller brothers.
The Guest brothers (Christopher, Nicholas) play the two Ford brothers.
Also, there is a fantastic special effects part where the gangs get ambushed when holding up a bank. The bullit sounds and bullit wounds are quite exceptional.

Two comedy westerns (they're still westerns):

Wagon's East

¡Three Amigos!

I've seen Maverick and ¡Three Amigos!, but not Wagon's East. They maybe be Western Themed Comedies, but Western as a genre suggests a certain style apart from other genres.

Citizen Kane, for example, has many elements that are the same as Film Noir, and yet almost no one would class it in that genre.

Thanks for the suggestions all.

I haven't seen Unforgiven

Is "Gunfight At The OK Corral" any good? Is there any point in seeing it in addition to Tombstone?

I would have thought you'd put 'Blazin Saddles' instead of 'Wagons East' Extro old chum. A better made funnier film imho.

She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, with John Ford directing John Wayne is pretty good.

Everyone shoud see Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin singing in Paint Your Wagon at least once. Probably only once.

Cowboys with John Wayne. Bruce Dern plays a bad guy part pretty well in that, as well as one of many bad guys in Hang 'Em High.

Regarding comedy westerns (like Three Amigos), why aren't they westerns? I think Three Amigos had all the elements of a western. Another was The Frisco Kid with Gene Wilder and Harrison Ford.

Quigley Down Under. Perhaps not the best Western ever, but undeniably the best Western ever set in Australia.

I think I'm one of the few who preferred Pale Rider to Unforgiven...I guess I'm just not looking for some goof ball morality play in my westerns. Predictable 1 dimensional characters and the little guys versus the big bad business guy plot...now that's a westen!

RSA,

You should check out Bruce Willis' remake of A Fistful of Dollars, which is called Last Man Standing. Except for the naration (which is completely unnecessary and spoils the suspension of disbelief), it's a good retelling, and a nice blending of the gangster-prohibition-era genre the western.

Both films are remakes of Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo, which you should also see. The Magnificent Seven is a remake of his Seven Samurai.

I saw True Grit five times in three days when it first came out because my younger sister liked Glen Campbell and I was selected to take her. I like buttered popcorn so it wasn't so bad.
