Thanks Zag. She is pretty young, but has a good head on her sholders and he just as excited as she is. They are going to be moving for his job, which makes me a little sad, but they are going to be great parents.

Hopefully your kids will wait until they established in thier careers, but who am I to talk when it comes to that.

I still chuckle when I think of my 2 year old and 8 year old as uncles. hehehe

I had been dieting since July and lost over 45 pounds and then after New Year's, for some reason I just stopped. I wouldn't say I was binge eating, but I was definitely not following through with my life changes. At my lowest, I was 183.4, and a few weeks ago I stepped on the scale and was a bit less than 189. 5 pounds ain't horrible, but it was my first slip up.

So...I didn't step on the scale for a couple of weeks. And yesterday I decided that I needed to go back to what I was doing before, so I stepped on the scale this morning to see what the final damage was. I doubted it could have been a 10 pound gain from my low, but I supposed it could have been.

183.0. My all-time low. I stepped on the scale five times and then got on a different scale to make sure.

My body is weird.

What made you Euphoric today?

Ah today during the day was most exhausting. I am working a labour position installing 370 meters of 12 yellow dots every 50 mm. Today we finished another ~30 meters. Fortunately paying attention to what is generally going on beside the train track has gotten me a "better" but still back breaking job. But all of that nonsense just left me tired and not happy.

But after dinner and the sweet feeling of putting my legs up on the couch and massaging my tired muscles. The evening for most people would have ended there! Alas, I have made the effort to get down to the pottery studio every night and I had two lids to finish. Making work that has to be finished the next day forces me to drive down there.

Apparently there was a class on Tuesday nights. I don't really know when the classes meet and was told I could work through them anyways. It was also their last session-- complete with finished glazed pottery, food, and wine. At the university studio in Fairbanks alcohol was strongly discouraged... so having potters juice in the studio is a welcome change! The class was a cheerful bunch and a few of them watched me finish making the lids.
There are many approached to lids. Currently I have been throwing the base and a lid with clay to trim away. Both pieces are set to dry together with corn starch on the rim. The excess clay is trimmed away and then a lump of soft clay is added. This lump is then centered and shaped into a knob. It is fun but also time consuming process. So now after a glass of wine I am Happy

It gets better. Somewhere in the depth of daydreams or the night I came up with an idea. It starts with throwing a narrow and tall cylinder (the basic starting point for everything except bowls). Tall and narrow is difficult for me; I have thick wide hands. This one came out very nicely. Oh, and another glass of wine! So after cleaning up the cylinder I would attempt to pull two sides of the entire cylinder upward. This technique is commonly used to make spouts. Then I pinched the top of the cylinder mostly closed leaving just a pinkie-sized hole.
Working the thin cylinder naturally deflates it quite a bit. After adding a few gesturing pulls the magic of re-inflating the piece by blowing into the hole. Mmm the gritty taste of clay. The expression of the piece was really starting to take shape with the elegance of a headless dancer. After letting the clay stiffen a bit with a hair dryer, A head was added. I used a cylinder of clay in the lumped fashion similar to lids earlier today. (Next time I think I will use a second wheel to form the head.) Making a round head was difficult because of the stubby arms of the pulled+pinched clay getting in the way. With a little more smoothing tomorrow the dancing lady shape will be as fine as I imagined.

Three really good hours make a day perfect.

On the refrigerator at the studio there is a magnet with the phrase "Celebrate until further notice"

There was a boy, maybe five years old but I'm a terrible judge of kid's ages so don't take my word for it, sitting a few rows in front of me at church today. At one point I happened to notice him drawing a picture in a notebook (it was a train, fwiw.)
I was a bit surprised that his mother would let him doodle in church, but considering I wrote puzzles in the margin of my university graduation program I guess I don't really have much of a leg to stand on.
Later I saw another page of the notebook and realized that this was much more than a simple doodle. Doodling is something I do mindlessly when I'm bored. Clearly this was not mindless at all, because on the later notebook page I saw the words "The End".
