Ok, here's the deal. There are 48 movies above 3 nominations. These recieve seeds 1-12 in 4 different brackets. There are 33 movies at 3 nominations. I'm going to do a little run of to decide which 16 of those get in.

There are 70 at 2 nominations each. I'm simply not prepared to do anything with them. Maybe some other time we can do a "best of the rest" if you want.

So, honorable mentions go to:

(2) Requiem for a Dream
(2) Castle in the Sky
(2) Trainspotting
(2) The Lady Vanishes
(2) Seven Samurai
(2) Cube
(2) Brazil
(2) Aliens
(2) Gladiator
(2) The Green Mile
(2) The Matrix Reloaded
(2) Dogville
(2) I Robot
(2) A Fistful of Dollars
(2) Tora Tora Tora
(2) Matchstick Men
(2) The Ladykillers
(2) Music Man
(2) Adaptation
(2) Braveheart
(2) Shrek
(2) Moulin Rouge
(2) Cruel Intentions
(2) Chicago
(2) Whole Nine Yards
(2) Robin Hood: Men in Tights
(2) The Last Boy Scout
(2) Dogma
(2) Once Were Warriors
(2) A River Runs Through It
(2) Back to the Future 3
(2) Airplane!
(2) The Game
(2) Goldeneye
(2) Robin Hood (Disney)
(2) It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad world
(2) Jumanji
(2) Stalag 17
(2) Hoosiers
(2) Cool Hand Luke
(2) The Unforgiven
(2) Highlander
(2) Ghostbusters
(2) Good Will Hunting

(2) Almost Famous
(2) Field of Dreams
(2) Chasing Amy
(2) Saving Private Ryan
(2) My Fair Lady
(2) Midway
(2) Animal House
(2) It’s a Wonderful Life

you know, another way to score this would be to take the 16 highest scoring movies from all the threads together. That way you help avoid killing off better movies simply because they may have come up against a stacked spread.

Another way i'd thought of would have been to give each movie its own poll and just have people vote yes or not for it if they liked it. That would have been a more massive undertaking, obviously, so i doubt that would have been practical, but perhaps for future reference, in case any smaller tournaments come about Revenge most foul!

[edit] also, the first idea would help in cases where movies are almost neck and neck and only one can be chosen above the other. anyway, whatever. just thinking out loud Revenge most foul!

You could have the second best movie up against the best, and not get any votes because everyone likes the best movie better. Doing it that way wouldn't solve the problem, and at least this way we can say with certainty that the ones that get left out were not the most liked in their groups.

draw = placing them in the bracket. You're going to do it randomly anyway (at least in picking between the ones that got the same number of nominations), so why not roll dice in chat?

word, sorry, I'll try to explain better.

Number of votes:
Runoff 8: 19, 17, 15, 10
Runoff 3: 23, 12, 9, 7

Now, your method says we take 23, 19, 17, 15; but isn't it very possible that the one with 12 votes has so few because the 23 is so popular (i.e., it's in a "stacked" group, in the sense of being up against really tough competition)? Also, it might not be the case that the 15 vote movie is in a stacked group, it might just be that they're all equally hated.

Also, don't forget that not everyone voted in a given thread; in the above example, runoff 8 has 10 more votes than runoff 3. Even with percentages though, your method is at best no better than the way dethy is doing it, and probably worse.

actually, having pointed out that runoff 8 has more votes is entirely my point. It means that more people have seen/are interested in that set of movies overall. I do, however, see your point about a good movie getting fewer votes simply because it's up against an awesome movie. Taking that into consideration, i agree that they are about the same, but i wouldn't say that my idea would be any worse. Razz

There seem to be a lot of very interesting (and already depressing) match-ups.

Blade Runner could all too easily go down to Lion King, Empire or Memento, any of which will piss me off.

Much the same could go for Shawshank. It's gonna hit a lot of just o.k. movies that are way more popular than they should be.

Se7en going down to Eternal Sunshine will be obvious, and I'll agree with it, but it's a pretty rough second round draw.

The worst possible first round match is next. Grail will beat American Beauty, and I will ever-afterwards despise it. Especially when it takes down either Aladdin or Back to the Future later on.

The bottom half of the first bracket should be very interesting. Raiders, Terminator, The Shining, Last Crusade - all of them are great, all of them could win it.

I think Terminator II has the most consistanly awful draw. Life of Brian is a total wild card, and then it hits Return of the King, and if still in it, no way it can take the Matrix.

Fight Club's in an interesting spot, too. Kane should barely get a whisper, but the Godfather, II should set up a fantastic match. Unfortunately, then comes Fellowship, which everyone has somehow convinced themselves was worth watching, so of course I am worried.

Overall, Matrix v. Princess Bride should be the Final - I'm glad they ended up in separate halves.

There is a degree to which I can understand my adoration of Blade Runner is a personal taste thing, so I'm not actually upset about its seeding. Overall, in fact, I think that given the 64 movies in the tournament, the seeding turned out very well. There is only one movie that really, truly got jobbed: American Beauty. I cannot believe it wasn't at least a 3-seed.

It only got 3 nominations, and barely made it out of the play-offs, and you think it deserves anything else but a 16? Revenge most foul!

Heck, Dr. Strangelove and Emperor's new Groove could be argued were more screwed, as they got more votes but were against stiffer competition.

Oh, I certainly wasn't criticizing your methods - it obviously got the appropriate seed according to the mechanics - it's more that I believe/hope the low support shown for it was a matter of skewed voting motives and such. I freely admit that a couple of my nominations were attempts to support movies I would like to have had in the competition rather than a strict attempt to find my favorite 20.
