The Great Escape.
I used to love Hunt for Red October (and I still do love the theme - what is that? Their National Anthem?), but I read the book and it was SO much better. |

I will. Keep in mind though the level of credibility isn't exactly top-notch.
Would you really value or appreciate back-up opinions from a guy who wanted to vote for Mary Poppins? |

CP, I hated City of the Lost Children and The Dark Crystal. All the other movies are either on my list or were close to getting on it
Mathgrant, if it makes you happier, I also liked the South Park movie. _________________ After years of disappointment with get rich quick schemes, I know I'm gonna get rich with this scheme. And quick! |

I liked the South Park movie too, but not enough to put it up there. I also forgot about Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. D'oh!
Antrax, don't let Cordelia hear you hated Dark Crystal. She made me go out and buy it after all her raving about it =D |

Antrax:
I thought The Game and Devil's Advocate were just o.k. - the others on your list that I've seen were similarly close to making it on mine, though I'd still put Aladdin and Beauty over Emperor for Disney.
I bet the overlap would deteriorate very quickly if we compared larger lists, though. A lot of the movies that would make my top, say, 50, are actually pretty weak/cheesy, but just have either a tone I find interesting, or a couple really good scenes that hook me. I was moderately close to adding Batman, Dead Poet's Society, Hackers, The Mask, Pi, The Professional, and The Wedding Singer, and I even gave Hudson Hawk a second thought. |

Just a note on Liliputan's nomination, Leon-
If I remember correctly, in the US, it was released under a different name entirely... The Professional
That may help it out in the nominations.... _________________ -LmL

Oooh. Nightmare Before Christmas. From the parts I've seen, I like it (and that is at least 80% of the movie), but I've never sat down and watched the whole thing, so I don't want to nominate it

| I don't see many of the 'older' films nominated, I mean, stuff in B&W. Do you think that the age of folk nominating will be a factor in this? Looking over folks lists it seems that a large percentage of nominations are from within the last 15 years. Does this mean some of the best films were made then? Or is it because of the age of folk nominating? Or because these films had a better distribution due to today's technology? |

Aga, I think there's a lot of influences on why older films aren't as popular...besides the age of the person, which is a good reason though. Most films just don't stand the test of time as well. With respect to humor, I think today's standards are much different, and when it comes to point of reference, it's hard to relate to issues in a movie that aren't relevant today...obviously when the movie's not meant to be about the past And another reason is just the technology of the film. Just watching a movie that appears very dated in film quality can sometimes make it less enjoyable, IMO.

Aga, the main reason I don't like older movies is the change in directing style. Movies used to be a lot slower, and I'm used to them being more fast-paced. A good example of this is, IMO, Ocean's 11. I loved the Soderberg remake, but the original bored me to death. There ARE several old movies I like (for example, 12 angry men), thought. _________________ After years of disappointment with get rich quick schemes, I know I'm gonna get rich with this scheme. | Aga: I nominated a few classics, at age 19. However, I know that I watch most movies with friends, and most of them aren't interested in the classics so most of the movies I see are newer. And many of them are very good. |

Reynolds Wrap is new. Saran wrap is not.

| In 1933, Ralph Wiley, a Dow Chemical lab worker, accidentally discovered polyvinylidene chloride or Saran. Ralph, a college student who cleaned glassware in a Dow Chemical lab, came across a vial he couldn't scrub clean. He called the substance "eonite", after an indestructible material in the comic strip "Little Orphan Annie." ...Saran films are best known in the form of Saran Wrap ® film, the first cling wrap designed for household (1953) and commercial use (1949), introduced by the Dow Chemical Company. Saran Wrap ® brand plastic film is now marketed by S. C. Johnson. |

Okay, I didn't think you were alluding to sound of music. I think that was made somewhere in that area. I have not seen that one. I'll have to see The Great Escape.
[soap box]Obviously technology has transformed film making but I also think that film making as an art has gotten better. On a side note from that, I think older movies often fall by the wayside because of the change in society's values. Many films that were once classics now seem corny as attitudes and humor have advanced with the decades.
I'm a little disappointed to see nominations for movies that I consider nothing but cheesey yet no votes for It's a Wonderful Life, Ben Hur or The Ten Commandments. Films like those have become obsolete in a world that now admires Natural Born Killers as fine art. [/ramble]

I just finished taking a film class, as we watches some classics. The 6 we saw full length were:
Citizen Kane
Casablanca
Glory
Rain Man
Psycho
Tootsie
The only one i really liked all around was Glory.
Tootsie was good, in an 80's hairstyle/no one knows anything about femenism sort of way.
Rain Man was good only because Dustin Hoffman is probably the best damned character actor ever.
Psycho was good, as most Hitchcock stuff tends to be, although in today's society the ending is no big deal, as had been meant to be.
Citizen Kane was decent for an older film. I didn't really relate to the main character, though, or really feel sorry for him other than a sort of "it sucks that his parents were asshats"
Casablanca.... just, no. It's my first time ever seeing Humphry Bogart in a movie, and i wasn't impressed. He looks half asleep all the time. And it honestly doesn't seem to go much of anywhere. It sits and spins in circles and twiddles its thumbs. _________________ Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like? |
