On TV, there's a commercial for some deodorant company, in which the voiceover says "smell is the strongest sense tied to memory" (or something close to that).

Is there any scientific proof to back that up? Surely there is, but it’s just a matter of finding it.

(Until then, I’m going to look out for that commercial again )

There is evidence to back it up. It's accepted fact that smell is most strongly tied to memory out of any of the senses. I don't know the specifics, but from what i understand it has something to do with the fact that smell is the least filtered of the senses. All of the others go through some sort of apparatus that translates perception into understandable signals to the brain. Smell, however, has receptors tied directly to the brain itself.

Odds are, however, that someone here on the GL will tell me "That's not why it works at all, it's because of [Insert valid explanation here]" But i figured i'd at least give you something to chew on Revenge most foul!

And i do recall that commercial. It starts out with two guy watching a football game, going nuts, and their wives/girlfriends are in the next room. One of them asks how the other puts up with it. One of the guys comes in and hugs his significant other and I think the scent is from his shirt (which probably makes it a detergent commercial.) and remembers happy times with that same scent.

It might have been deoderant or cologne or something, though.

(Old Spice deodorant. They have a new one now with the same premise but different particulars: guy and girl on a camping trip; the girl is a little creeped out, hugs the guy, catching a whiff of the fragrance wafting from his armpit, which makes it all okay.)

...Shouldn't you be unable to smell deodorant? I mean, that's what it's called. I thought they were going for a "smell is the strongest sense tied to memory, so you want to make sure you don't leave bad memories" type of thing.

Well, you can't just "disappear" smell. You have to mask it with something, i.e. a better smell. That's why my deodorant is the best. Becuase it smells like...good, hott-chick attracting goodness.

deoderants don't work on the premise of *removing* odor, they *prevent* odor by inhibiting the growth of the bacteria that cause the odor.

anti-perspirants inhibit the sweat glands which in theory should keep the area dry and unsusceptible to bacterial growth. Most anti-perspirants have a deoderant as well, just in case.

This is the reason that unscented deoderants/anti-perspriants are possible.

However most brands make scented ones to cover up any bad smell that does make it through and also as a way to sell their product, since nice smelling stuff is more likely to attract customers than stuff that has no scent at all.

Now, I know next to nothing about etymology, but I think that "uberodorant" would be a much better word than "surodorant" for the purposes of this discussion.

'Cause it sounds cooler. I mean, come on. "Uberodorant". Right?

I'll... just show myself out, then.

While I was out and about this evening, this smell encountered my olfactories (or whatever the hell they're called) and made me think of my best friend whom I haven't seen in years. (We lost touch after we both went through a series of moves. Melancholy ) Anyway, he just always had this smell that whenever I smelled it, I thought of him. It wasn't a bad smell or a good smell, but it will always be, to me, his smell.
